Birchbox is a beauty sampling subscription service that sends 5 new items each month so you can try before you buy. Birchbox is $10 a month and you can choose a monthly sample during selection time, let Birchbox decide, or pick a pre-curated box. This is a review of a regular, non-curated box with sample choice. How well did it match the profile that I created when I signed up? Read on to find out!

DEAL:For a limited time use coupon code STARSKIN to get two FREE STARSKIN Camellia Nourishing & Brightening Sheet Masks (a $20 value!) with a 3-month Birchbox subscription!

Looking good!

The theme for October is Turn Over a New Leaf (get it?). The product info card had some helpful tips for this time of the year.

The back of the card gives brief details on each item as well as the price if you were to buy the full size.

You can visit Birchbox.com/MyBox to easily see the details of your box, which I recommend because sometimes they have videos on the item product pages which I find useful.

Everything in my October box!

Davines Melu Hair Shield ($11.10) My biggest gripe with Birchbox is that they send hair products that are not a match for my hair type. This product says it is specifically for hair that is long or damaged. My profile states that my hair is too short for a ponytail. I will pass it along to someone else. I do like Davines products, I just want one that I can use! If you have damaged hair then you can spray this on and comb through before blow drying.

Malin + Goetz Vitamin E Face Moisturizer ($6.25) According to Birchbox this product is oil-free and can be used on all skin types. I didn’t see fragrance listed, which is good for sensitive skin types. It lists hyaluronic acid but that is the last ingredient listed and salicylic acid is higher up. I have dry skin and salicylic acid is know to dry skin. If you have acne then you might have better luck in the long run with this moisturizer.

Air Repair Hydrating Serum ($3.64) also has hyaluronic acid, which draws water to the skin, and it’s higher up on the list of ingredients. I liked the mild scent and my skin didn’t feel greasy after using this serum, which has plant extracts like cloudberry and tiger nut.

Purlisse Perfect Glow BB Cream SPF 30 – SIMILAR ($6) I’m not sure why but the name of this product and the one on my Birchbox page are not quite the same. I received the shade “Medium” and my profile says “light to medium” so I went ahead and changed my profile to “light” since I’m not in the sun as much. I appreciate that this product has SPF 30 because some mornings I am in a hurry and don’t have time for sunscreen to sink in so this is the type of product I use when time is short. It turned out this color worked fine for me and although it says “oil-free” my skin felt very moist after I used it and I ended up setting it with powder. The coverage was better than I thought it would be, closer to a foundation than a tinted moisturizer.

Winky Lux Strobing Balm Radiant Pink ($7.71) was my sample choice this month. The other two sample choice items were the moisturizer and hair product shown earlier in my review. I didn’t pick them for a reason but it didn’t stop me from receiving them anyways.

I received the shade Radiant Pink but they also have a shade called Rose Gold available.

You can apply with your finger or a makeup sponge. I swiped some on my nose, cheeks, and above my lip and then used a makeup brush to blur the lines. It was easy to blend and I didn’t look sparkly, just glowy.

On top is the BB cream and underneath that is the highlighter.

I was quite happy with three of the products I received this month – the highlighter, BB cream, and serum. The other two products were not a good fit with my profile so I will pass them along. Since this is a sampling subscription, I know that I won’t love everything I receive and I am ok with that since I feel like this is much more sanitary than trying products at the beauty stores. I have discovered lots of can’t-live-without products from Birchbox over the years and happily find new items I like all the time! My October box had a value of around $34.70 but keep in mind that Birchbox sends a variety of box combos every month so your value may vary depending on what products you receive.
