I had an experience recently that sent my heart racing, friend,

It’s the kind of experience, that, a year ago, would have left my heart racing for quite some time. I would have replayed the conversation over and over in my head in the shower, while laying down to go to sleep, and it would have greeted me in the morning. The emotional hangover would probably have lingered for a few days.

This time was different.

I was able to watch the conversation as if I were an outsider, experiencing the conversation both by being in it and seeing what was happening in my body:

“Oh interesting, my heart is racing!”
“Oh, that’s funny, my face is bright red. Look at that.”
“Hmm…I can’t believe they just said that. I think it’s triggering me because…”

I’ve been practicing mindfulness for the better part of the last year. It was incredible to be able to witness progress in real time. To see the absolute effect of being able to stop in the moment and breathe. To be able to experience the change that a long, deep breath can have on your ability to focus and be present and choose your response, instead of allowing your amygdala to take over.

As you continue on your own mindfulness journey, I hope that you not only take advantage of mindful moments throughout the day, savoring the sips of tea and the relaxation of your bath salts, but that this relaxation and mindfulness translates into other areas of your life – conversations with your partner, child, boss, neighbor – anywhere where you’d like a bit more calm, presence, focus, and joy.
