This is a review of the July 2018 Curated Box, which is now available in the Birchbox Shop! The box is $10 for subscribers ($15 for non-subscribers).

Birchbox sent some tips on how to hack your summer.

The information card gives brief details on each item as well as the price if you were to buy the full size.

Everything in the July 2018 Birchbox Curated Box!

Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional Face Primer ($4.13) Doesn’t Benefit have the cutest packaging ever? I was in a couple of different airports this summer and they even had adorable Benefit vending machines so you can get your favorites while traveling!

Summer is prime shine time, even for my dry skin. This tinted primer has that classic silky dimethicone texture and went on smoothly and kept my makeup from slipping off.

Bumble and bumble. Don’t Blow It (H)air Styler – Fine ($3.10) I also received a regular Birchbox this month and this product and the Kiehl’s cleanser shown below were in there so I’m just going to let you know what I thought the first time around: “The idea behind this product is that you apply it to wet hair after a shower and let your hair air dry, skipping the blow dryer. It is supposed to enhance texture and body and it has UV filters to protect hair from the damaging rays of the sun. I tried it and it did nothing for my hair. I really have to blow dry to get my hair off of my scalp for body, but if you have longer hair and prefer a beachy look then this might work well for you.”

NOTE: My daughter is back from her mission trip and gladly took both Bb. samples off my hands!

Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser ($4.60) Also a product that I tried earlier this month, here’s my thoughts: “I know this says it’s a foaming face wash but it was creamy to me, and a touch gritty thanks to the clay. I skipped my usual oil cleanse and went straight for this product and it did get rid of most of my makeup, although I did find some traces of makeup on my cotton pad when I went over it with toner.”

W3LL PEOPLE Expressionist Mascara ($21.99 Full-Size .23 oz., $8?) I couldn’t find the size of this mascara but it is a pretty generous size.

I like the brush since I have short lashes and this helps me get closer to the root than longer brushes. I thought it worked well for my lashes and stayed on all day without smudging, and it’s pretty darn hot where I live. It’s a bonus that this is a toxin-free beauty line that is also cruelty-free, and I am always happy to see this Austin-based company’s products show up in a box!

MakeupDrop™ The Original Silicone Makeup Applicator Micro ($10) Ooh, this has only a 2-star rating on Birchbox (out of 813 reviews) so it looks like it wasn’t a big win this month. The applicator is made of silicone so anytime I set it down it sort of sticks to that surface. Unlike a spongy Beautyblender, this one doesn’t absorb product, so there is supposed to be less wasted product.

It’s shaped like a teardrop and the micro size is supposed to get into tiny spaces, such as under the eyes or around the nose. The larger size would be more appropriate for face makeup, but I won’t be buying one. I had a hard time using the applicator, it is kind of hard, not soft, and I found that I needed the warmth of my finger to blend my under-eye concealer correctly. It is easy to clean, just rinse under water or wipe with a cleansing cloth.

I thought the July Birchbox Curated Box had some good products to help beat the heat and sticky temperatures this month. I had already tried two of the products in my regular box (which sometimes happens) and the silicone applicator was fun to try, even if it didn’t work well for me. My favorite item was the mascara, since it is hard to find a natural mascara that works well and this one did, and lasted all day in the heat and humidity too. I don’t have an exact value for this month since I had to guess on the size of the mascara, but around $30 seems about right. I think that’s a great return on the $10 price!
