Universal Yums is a monthly international snack subscription box. Every month, you’ll take a trip to a new country and munch on brand new exciting snacks. There are two sizes of box, the Yum ($13) and the Yum Yum ($25). This is the Yum Yum box, and it’s a fun subscription that we get a kick out of each and every month.

This month the treats were from Philippines!

All of the items that came in my Philippines Box!

The smaller candies all come in a Yum Bag so they don’t get tossed all around the box. We got two Yums bags again his month!

This month’s introductory note tells a bit about how food is a central part of the Filipino culture.

The information for all the yums comes in a great booklet each month.

The information book has notes about all of the items and their ingredients.

These books are so informative – it includes a bit of the snack’s history and how it might taste.

Oishi Pillows Ube filled Crackers – Potatoes for dessert? That is a YES in the Philippines and I can get behind that all the way. All things with potatoes are delicious and these are no exception. These are made from the purple ube yam. A bit sweet and the color just makes me happy.

Goldilocks Pinipig Polvoron – These were in one of my yum bags and are some of my favorite kinds of cookies, Shortbread! These are made with Polvoron which contains pieces of pinipig, a toasted sticky rice that originated in the Philippines. Not sure I could tell there was sticky rice in here but it was delicious and a snack I could keep eating.

Rebisco Extreme Ultimate Choco – Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate. These fun cookies are chocolate coated with chocolate filling and are topped off with sprinkles. I’ll say the sprinkles are what makes it for me. They aren’t expected and really finish it off.

Leslie’s Cheezy Corn Crunch – The Philipines use sweet, sour, and savory flavors to bring the spice versus crazy hot and spicy. So while these say jalapeno, they are very eatable. I got of got the impression of a flavored cheeto when I was munching away.

Boy Bawang Barbecue – These are one of the most popular snacks in the Philippines. They are garlicky corn nuts. The corn nuts are soaked in water for several days and then lightly fried for a fluffier crunch.

Cupp Keyk – A cupcake in a bag! These remind me of the snacks we get here in the US. Universal Yums sent our various flavors and we got Coco Ube which was a coconut ube flavored cake.

Oishi Ketchup Potato Fries – Ketchup in the Philippine are made with a banana base and then dyed with red food coloring to give it the ketchup look. These had a unique taste and I’m not sure it’s in a good way. I’m not a huge regular ketchup fan but I don’t think the banana version is going to be taking its place anytime soon.

Goldilocks Ube Polvoron – More shortbread cookies! Purple is my favorite color so all of these ube snacks are right up my alley.

Chili Cheese Flavored Corn Snack – Many of the clovers in the Philippines have 4 leaves. Wouldn’t that be a treat here in the US? These remind me of the flavor of a chili cheese frito but the texture of goldfish crackers.

The Yum Bag candies!

Mr. Buko – Green candies that are made with pandan and buko. Pandan is a Southeast Asian plant that has long slender leaves with a nutty somewhat grassy flavor and buko is young coconut.

Mr. Mais – The Philippines are famous for their amazing street foods. These taste just like corn and butter.

Mr. Keso – A cheese candy? These are a unique blend of cheddar cheese and sweet cream. Universal Yums says some say it’s like a cheesecake and some say a nightmare. Since I gagged a bit I’m going with nightmare.

The May Philippines Universal Yums was interesting and fun to try all the new foods. My boys and I always look up the country and then work our way through the box so its a fun game for us. I find it most interesting in the flavors that other countries enjoy and how they are so different from here in the US. I love trying and finding new Yums and countries that I can’t wait to add to my bucket list.

The back of the information booklet has a clue for the next country and tells us about the new SUPER YUM box option. Clue:

In the Land of the Palms, they’ve got it all-
Jungles, and dances and lots of football.
And let’s not forget all the Yums you can taste,
Sweet bread, hot peppers, and creamy nut paste!

Where do you think we are going?

Next Month we are going to Brazil!
