There are several genres to choose from such as “For the Janeite” (all things Austen), “For the Proud” (LGBT), and “For the Wee Ones” (for children). I went with “For the Sleuth” since I am currently on a mystery kick. I answered some questions and gave a link for my Goodreads account. I said I like books that take place in the U.K., ghost stories are good, but I didn’t want any gore. I mentioned that I like historical romance and Gone Girl types of stories.

I received a personalized card and loved the description of the book: “If Jane Austen wrote a heart-stopping ghost story, this would be it!” I was already hooked!

If you already own a book sent or are just not loving it, then pass it along to someone else and let Page 1 Books send you another title.

Everything in my box! My book was wrapped and I received some other book-related items.

I found a lovely Postcard in my box! This is from Alice: 100 Postcards from Wonderland ($24.04 for a box of 100). This quote is taken directly from the book: “It’s always six o’clock now.”

The card is suitable for framing, mailing, or using as a book mark!

Next was a coaster from Balvi featuring a quote from William Faulkner. I think it is made of PVC. I don’t know that it would absorb any condensation but I would probably rest a hot cup of tea on it.

I am forever looking for bookmarks so I was quite happy to see that Page 1 Books has my back!

The back of the bookmark featured a quote from Jane Austen.

My featured book was wrapped in brown paper with a lovely maroon ribbon around it. No matter how old you get, it’s still nice to rip open a present!

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill (List price $14, currently selling for $11.20) When I opened this up, I thought it looked familiar – it was a movie starring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter!) that came out in 2012! This book was originally published in 1983 but is the #16 bestseller in the horror genre on Amazon (behind Frankenstein and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies). I was completely amazed at this selection – it’s like Page 1 Books knew exactly what book I would want, without my actually telling them to get me this book. This hits so many different levels of story that I enjoy. It has a ghost, it takes place in the past, it’s set in Wales, it’s gothic in tone. I haven’t read this one and I cannot wait to get started, this is just perfect for me!

The classic ghost story from the author of The Mist in the Mirror: a chilling tale about a menacing spectre haunting a small English town. Now a major motion picture starring Daniel Radcliffe.

Arthur Kipps is an up-and-coming London solicitor who is sent to Crythin Gifford—a faraway town in the windswept salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway—to attend the funeral and settle the affairs of a client, Mrs. Alice Drablow of Eel Marsh House. Mrs. Drablow’s house stands at the end of the causeway, wreathed in fog and mystery, but Kipps is unaware of the tragic secrets that lie hidden behind its sheltered windows. The routine business trip he anticipated quickly takes a horrifying turn when he finds himself haunted by a series of mysterious sounds and images—a rocking chair in a deserted nursery, the eerie sound of a pony and trap, a child’s scream in the fog, and, most terrifying of all, a ghostly woman dressed all in black. Psychologically terrifying and deliciously eerie, The Woman in Black is a remarkable thriller of the first rate.

I was absolutely thrilled with my very first Page 1 Books box! I cannot believe they actually got me and I also can’t believe I’ve never read this book before! The personalized card was a nice touch and the other accessories were book-related although not a high value. Still, they were only in shades of black and white so maybe that was intentional! I am just so amazed at how good of a job they did in picking my book and I can’t wait to see how my next two boxes turn out!
