BraveTart Iconic American Desserts by Stella Parks

From One-Bowl Devil’s Food Layer Cake to a flawless Cherry Pie that’s crisp even on the very bottom, BraveTart is a celebration of classic American desserts. Whether down-home delights like Blueberry Muffins and Glossy Fudge Brownies or supermarket mainstays such as Vanilla Wafers and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream, your favorites are all here. These meticulously tested recipes bring an award-winning pastry chef’s expertise into your kitchen, along with advice on how to “mix it up” with over 200 customizable variations—in short, exactly what you’d expect from a cookbook penned by a senior editor at Serious Eats. Yet BraveTart is much more than a cookbook, as Stella Parks delves into the surprising stories of how our favorite desserts came to be, from chocolate chip cookies that predate the Tollhouse Inn to the prohibition-era origins of ice cream sodas and floats. With a foreword by The Food Lab’s J. Kenji López-Alt, vintage advertisements for these historical desserts, and breathtaking photography from Penny De Los Santos, BraveTartis sure to become an American classic.

This cookbook is full of history, and the reasoning and science behind each recipe.

The back of the book features reviews that’ll make you interested in looking through it.

The chef even included a note that says, “Happy Baking!” Well, thank you, Stella! We’ll definitely try your recipes, they all look delightful!

My favorite recipe from the cookbook is this McDonald’s Style Apple Pie Turnovers!

Karen’s Naturals Just Strawberries. We got a bag of freeze-dried strawberries which can be used in making Stella’s Make-Ahead Whipped Cream. It’s also ideal for making Pop-Tarts and Rice Krispies Treats.

Also included in the box is a 20% off coupon code which you can use on your next purchase at Karen’s Naturals online shop.

Hoosier Hill Farm Malted Milk Powder. Blondies and crunch bars can make use of this malted milk powder to add complexity to the recipe.

The 8 oz. bag contains milk powder made from barley malt, wheat flour, milk, bicarbonate of soda, and salt.

Ateco Offset Spatula. The spatula has a bend, allowing to keep hands clear of frosting, especially when icing a cake. Also, the angle of the spatula allows for better control and flexibility during use.

Cookie Scoop. It is a 2-tablespoon-sized scoop, just the right size for a muffin dough. It is made of stainless steel for easy cleaning and scoops up just the right amount of frosting for cupcake recipes. Portioning out certain batters, may it be for tiny cakes, cookies, or other pastries, this will definitely do the job.

J.K. Adams Maple French Dowel Rolling Pin. This rolling pin is Stella’s favorite item as well. She finds it comfortable to use since it has just the right size for her hands and workspace. It pivots easily when you make square doughs for pop-tarts and apple turnovers, while applying pressure with one hand makes the other side swing out a bit to help short up corners.

Treats Bags. Of course, after baking the treats, you would want to place them inside a bag not just to make it presentable, but also to keep them fresh for a longer period of time. It’s a good thing they have included these bags!

Crate Chef is a wonderful box that invites you into the kitchen, and they always provide great choices that you can actually try on your own! The featured chef this month is also awesome, she shared not only recipes but also great techniques for baking. We will certainly try these all out!
