The Earrings of Madame de…by Max Ophuls: A visually sumptuous, charming film. With layers so beautifully laid. Funny, yet, as one of the characters says of his relationship with his wife- this film is not as superficial as it seems. Below the surface of unabashed gaiety, hearts do break.
