I go through one bottle of red and one bottle of white wine a month so the Variety Box is the best choice for me! I would like to note that over the last year I have received several rosés but I haven’t received any bubbly drinks.
January’s theme was A Return to South Africa. All the wines featured this month are from South Africa, which is the 7th largest producer of wine in the world (or 8th, or 9th, depends on where you look but definitely in the top 10!).
The Back Label is a mini-mag full of cool stuff – full-page intros with details on the wines, paired recipes for each, and even several articles on the theme and its relation to wine culture. I’m a newbie when it comes to wine appreciation and enjoy the insight this helpful magazine provides.
This month’s recipes were provided by Madiba Restaurant, which features South African cooking in NYC.
Each wine has its own information page including the following:
- Wine Name
- Grape
- Location
- What you should do while drinking this wine (many tongue-in-cheek)
- What to eat with the wine
- What to listen to while you drink the wine
- A cool chart showing a visual on the Acid, Body, Tannin, and Fruit of the wine
- Wine Bouquet
- Tasting Notes
- Description
- Recipe
I received the following wines in my January box:
2016 Lekker Red comes from South Africa and features a blend of 5 different grapes – Cinsaut, Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, and Viognier. It was smooth with a pleasant finish and was neither too sweet nor too dry, and had a peppery nose and my husband was quite pleased with this one!
2017 Lekker White is from the same producer as above and is made with Chenin Blanc grapes, the most widely grown white grape in South Africa. Wine Awesomeness says that the mouth feel is “like licking early morning sunshine when it’s pouring through your windows with a vengeance”. Sounds crazy, but Wine Awesomeness has a way with words and it’s quite accurate. At first it is smooth, then it hits the back and sides of the tongue and you really feel it then. Nice.
2016 Eikendal Vineyards Rouge is a medium bodied red made from Shiraz and Petit Verdot grapes and, like the other wines this month, hails from South Africa. It has notes of red berries and a peppery nose. Good for everyday drinking and served with the usual – spaghetti, BBQ, or sausage.
I just wanted to show how informative the back of the Lekker bottles are. Look familiar? This brand was bottled in partnership with Wine Awesomeness!
I love that I learn something new each month from Wine Awesomeness, whether it’s about wine or where they come from. I have received this subscription for almost a year now and the only thing I would prefer is that they sent a moscato now and then. I love sweet wines and most of the ones I have received have been on the dry side, although I know I’m in the minority of sweet wine drinkers. I do cook with wine a lot so of course dry wines are the way to go when cooking. I feel like I’ve learned a lot about wines in the past few year and a lot of that is due to this subscription! Having wine delivered to my home is a big bonus but keep an eye on tracking because an adult 21 or over must be there to sign for the box, or you can arrange to pick it up at another place of business (such as Walgreens.)
