Girls Can Crate is a monthly subscription for children between 5 and 10 years of age that promotes the idea that girls can do whatever they set their minds to. Each month features a different female pioneer whose story inspires girls to achieve. Each box includes a 20 page activity book that includes the heroine’s story, 2-3 STEAM activities and creative play props. Boxes cost $29.95 each month and can ship to either the United States or Canada.

Although this box is intended for girls, I’m a firm believer that it’s crucial for boys to believe that girls can do whatever they set their minds to! The themes celebrate female pioneers from diverse backgrounds, but the activities themselves are usually gender neutral.

This month, Girls Can Crate celebrates the life of Grace O’Malley.

This month’s pointers are all about being bold. The card shares advice for fostering an indefatigable spirit in children through encouragement, praise, and the recognition of the value of failure.

Everything in the box!

This month’s activity book is entitled The Bold Pirate.

Grace O’Malley, the bold pirate, was a woman who fiercely defended her family and went after what she wanted. We don’t want to encourage anyone to a career of piracy, but instead we hope you’re inspired to be yourself and go after what you want boldly, too.

The booklet has great biographical information on the featured women, so kids can really get to understand their story and accomplishments.

My daughter loves the magazine. In addition to the main biographies, they include bits and pieces of trivia all over the magazine, too.

Did you know that her name was rendered in contemporary English documents in various ways, including Gráinne O’Maly, Graney O’Mally, Granny ni Maille, Grany O’Mally, Grayn Ny Mayle, Grane ne Male, Grainy O’Maly, and Granee O’Maillie. All are English versions of her actual name, Gráinne Ní Mháille. Still, she’s popularly known as the Pirate Queen!

Here are some of the known women pirates aside from Grace O’Malley!

This part of the booklet has a find the different activity.

There’s a page explaining about Irish clans and their coat of arms. You can also draw or make your own!

Another suggested activity is making fruit boats. On the other page is a glossary of pirate words!

There’s also a spread dedicated to an illustration of the parts of a ship.

Next is an activity about making your own treasure map!

Here are more facts about our Pirate Queen, and there’s a little box where kids can write their answer to the featured question.

She also loves answering the in-page activities.

Here’s a look at this month’s pin featuring The Bold Pirate, Grace O’Malley!

They include complete supplies for the activities.

Activity #1: Hide Yer Treasure. Hide yer Treasure is a fun and strategic treasure finding game.

This activity helps enhance problem-solving, communication, and dramatic play skills. Materials include a game board and markers.

Of course, the crate also provided the treasures!

This is a 2-player game and you have to be strategic to be able to collect and hide the treaures!

Activity #2: Build a Cannon. The next activity is building your own cannon. It involves science, math, engineering, science, and even art.

The instructions are greatly detailed and the instructions are really easy to follow.

The materials provided are cannon top, cannon bottom, side pieces, wheels, t-bars, scope, rubber band, ball, stickers and target coloring sheet. Markers and decorating materials from home are optional.

First, my daughter put the wooden pieces together. There are slots so it’s easy to figure out which part belongs to where.

After building the body of the cannon, just add the wheels and the rubberband with a bead.

The next parts my daughter added are the t-bars and the cannon scope!

Now, the cannon is ready to use!

To use, just drop the ball into the cannon’s body then pull the band back using the wood bead.

Then, release the wood bead so it bounces back and hits the ball.

Here’s my daughter testing out the cannon! Girls Can Crate also suggests to use a target or add obstacles when aiming. You can also stack non-breakable items and see if you can knock them down.

Activity #3: Making Yer Own Sea Glass. Here’s another sea-themed project, and it’s about making a sea glass! The crate provided a pack of sea glass ingredients and a parchment paper sheet. From home, you’ll need a bowl, water, measuring spoons, and a plate.

This pack is made with sugar, food coloring, confectioners glaze, carnauba wax, and corn syrup.

To make the sea glass candy, you just have to mix it with water then pour the mixture on parchment paper placed on a plate. The next steps require adult supervision, like putting the plate in the microwave and then taking it off when it’s done. The candies do look like sea glass and they’re actually edible!

Girls Can Crate always contains fun and creative activities. My kids get to learn a lot of stuff from every crate, and the featured heroines are great role models too! They send complete materials, while the instructions are clear and easy to follow. Overall, it’s a great box for the whole family to bond over!
