First look!

December’s box was co-curated by YouTube makeup guru Jaclyn Hill. I would be lying if I said I knew who she was before I received this box, but I watched a couple of her videos and she is funny and knows her way around a highlighter.

Each box comes with a mini magazine that gives tips on how to use the products, how much the full-sized product costs, and where to purchase, along with discount codes!

Everything in the box! My glossy red box was wrapped in plastic and my products were snuggled in white tissue paper and shredded squiggles for packing.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter in Champagne Pop ($19) My daughter was with me when I opened this box and was super excited to see this highlighter judging by the happy sounds and exclamations of “OH MY GOSH I HAVE WANTED THIS MY WHOLE LIFE”. I promised it to her after I finished reviewing it. When will I learn.

This stuff is pretty awesome. It’s also just plain pretty. Champagne Pop is described as “soft white gold with pinky/peach undertones” which means it works for a variety of skin tones and looks.

So purty!

Here it is swatched on my arm, but you should see my cheeks! Sometimes highlighters leave a dark tone on my fair skin but this one was perfect. Also, it is so easy to use – just drag your brush across the compact and apply wherever!

Ooohh, a Morphe makeup brush, I love Morphe brushes!

Jaclyn Hill calls this one “the holy grail of blending brushes.”

Morphe Pro M433 Firm Blending Fluff Brush ($6 plus shipping, or $21.99 on Amazon) features goat-hair bristles and is very versatile.

This brush has a pinched ferrule and is tapered in the middle. You can use it to apply all-over color, shade the crease, blend for a finished look, or any other use you can think of that applies to this size brush.

Dior Diorshow Mascara ($4.32) Oh la la, a super fancy mascara! Don’t bother trying to twist this in or out of the tube, just yank it out and then shove it back in when finished. Some mascaras smell like a Sharpie Marker but this one smells like perfume!

The brush looks like a little Goth Christmas tree! I have short lashes and was afraid to get the brush close to my lash line because I’ve done that before AND IT HUUUUUURTS! I thought it did an everyday kind of job, nothing spectacular.

Philosophy Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleanser ($3) is a creamy multitasker – you can use it to remove eye makeup and as a facial cleanser. I tried it both ways and it was effective at both jobs. I was even able to skip my usual makeup removing oil cleansing step. The Allure booklet mentions that it is made of “12 essential oils” that work with a cleansing agent but this actually has rubbing alcohol in it and that was all that I could smell when I used it. I would think that over time this would dry out my already dry skin.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer ($6.48) So, I’m not usually a primer kind of person, but THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING I’ve ever thought of primer.

I love the little glass container, and the primer feels like typical dimethicone-based primers. But my rosacea-prone skin looked less red, my CC cream went on flawlessly, and my makeup lasted all day long. I also like that this has mineral-based SPF 15, and it’s cruelty-free. We have a winner!

Oribe Matte Waves Texture Lotion ($6.18) is an awesome peachy-smelling lotion that helps give hair that beachy-look that some people can carry off. I prefer a more sleek look but since I’m on vacation I decided to skip the blow dryer and applied this instead. I should add that I have baby-fine stick straight hair. This really didn’t do anything for my hair except make it have a crunchy/stringy look. I basically looked like Witch Hazel of Bugs Bunny fame. I’m sure my daughter will love it so it will get passed along to her. NOTE: Amazon kindly showed a video of a beauty blogger using this product and it involved a blow dryer so maybe it’s not as “scrunch and go” easy as I thought.

Baublebar $20 Gift Card! This was another item my daughter was excited about which is good because I had no idea what it was. It turns out you can order all kinds of accessories such as jewelry, scarves, and bags and U.S. orders already get free shipping so this will help knock down the total of a full-priced item since the coupon isn’t for use on sale items.

As always, Allure Beauty Box provided a wonderful assortment of items with a focus on makeup because who wants to look drab at this time of year? I especially adored the Hourglass primer and Becca highlighter, and Morphe brushes are always awesome. This box had a value of around $44.98, although the value goes up when you use the selling price of the Morphe brush on Amazon and the Baublebar coupon, making it $80.97. Next month’s box is supposed to be phenomenal, and you can check out the spoilers here.
