I go through one bottle of red and one bottle of white wine a month so the Variety Box is the best choice for me!

November’s theme was French Harvest.

The Back Label is a mini-mag full of cool stuff – full-page intros with details on the wines, paired recipes for each, and even several articles on the theme and its relation to wine culture. I’m a newbie when it comes to wine appreciation and enjoy the insight this helpful magazine provides.

This month’s recipes were provided by Morels French Steakhouse & Bistro, located in the Palazzo Resort in Las Vegas!

Each wine has its own information page including the following:

  • Wine Name
  • Grape
  • Location
  • What you should do while drinking this wine (many tongue-in-cheek)
  • What to eat with the wine
  • What to listen to while you drink the wine
  • A cool chart showing a visual on the Acid, Body, Tannin, and Fruit of the wine
  • Wine Bouquet
  • Tasting Notes
  • Description
  • Recipe

I received the following wines in my November box:

2016 Chateau Allegret Entre-Deux-Meres is from Bordeaux and is made with 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon grapes. I prefer white wine for drinking and tried this wine first. Sometimes the descriptions are a little wild (“tastes like licking a migration of monarch butterflies”) but to my palate this was like licking a grapefruit. I have used it in 3 recipes already though – I make sure nothing goes to waste.

2016 Cante Perdrix Ventoux The Back Label mini magazine says this is supposed to be a 2015, but the bottle clearly says 2016. According to the book this red from the Rhone Valley is made of Carignan, Grenache, and Syrah grapes, and it has a Medaille d’Or on the label, a gold label earned in Paris in 2017. Medium bodied and tannic, my tongue was dry after sipping. Wine Awesomeness suggested serving with earthy mushrooms which I did in the form of a Mexican Pizza.

2016 Chateau Allégret Bordeaux is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes with a berry nose and mouth puckering tannins. Serve with something rich – they suggest a croque madame, a fancy grilled cheese sandwich that eats like a meal.

I have received this subscription for almost a year now and the only thing I would prefer is that they sent a moscato now and then. I love sweet wines and most of the ones I have received have been on the dry side, although I know I’m in the minority of sweet wine drinkers. I do cook with wine a lot so of course dry wines are the way to go when cooking. I feel like I’ve learned a lot about wines in the past few months and a lot of that is due to this subscription! Having wine delivered to my home is a big bonus but keep an eye on tracking because an adult 21 or over must be there to sign for the box, or you can arrange to pick it up at another place of business (such as Walgreens.)
