OwlCrate Jr. is a monthly book subscription box for young readers ages 8-12 with a middle-grade book plus fun gender neutral bookish items designed to enhance your little reader’s experience. It’s from Owl Crate, a super popular YA (young adult) fiction subscription.

The theme for the November 2017 OwlCrate Jr. box is CURSES!

DEAL: Sign up for your 1, 3, or 6-month subscription or gift with the code MAGIC15 to save 15%!

The information card cleverly conveys a bit about everything in the box.

Everything in the November OwlCrate JR. box!

Button Pin. Every month, a cute pin is included in this box and for this month, we got this cute voodoo doll pin!

Temporary Tattoos. This month’s box also includes some sets of lucky charms!

It’s safe on the skin and can be easily taken off too. The kids are loving those rainbow and clover leaf designs.

Amethyst. This gem comes in a cute pouch for easy safekeeping and “warding off bad energy.” There’s an info sheet too. We had to explain to our child that this was fanciful and not scientifically accurate…

This purple gemstone is the birthstone of those who were born on February. It’s a pretty addition to a rock collection – but to be totally honest, I didn’t love the statements about believing in the powers of a rock for my little sponge.

Owl Crate Unforgivable Curse Pencils. This actually made us excited because it is Harry Potter-related! However, I can sense the Death Eaters with this pack…

And there they are, the three unforgivable curses in the series, embedded on those pencils! I just have to warn the kids not to say the incantations or they’ll end up in Azkaban!

Gravity Falls Postcard. Dipper and Mabel are standing at the cursed door on this fun postcard.

Sending this postcard is a cool way of saying hi and hello to a friend, and to warn them to avoid the cursed door!

Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales By Naomi Lewis ($5.39)

This enchanting collection, retold by writer and critic Naomi Lewis, contains twelve of Hans Christian Andersen’s magnificent stories. It includes Thumbelina, a little girl no more than a thumb-joint high, The Emperor’s New Clothes, the tale of a man who cares only for his appearance and The Little Mermaid, who longs to one day marry a human prince. With a wonderful cover illustration and new introduction by award-winning picture-book creator Jan Pienkowski.

The book contains 12 of Hans Christian Andersen’s popular tales. The kids will surely love it!

Here are the 12 tales… They’re actually all familiar!

Here’s a sample page featuring “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” This is really a children’s classic.

All of the items relating to this month’s book selection.

Hotel Deucalion Notepad. Included is a notepad inspired by the featured book – the most extravagant hotel in Nevermoor.

Signed Bookplate From The Author. A signed bookplate from the author is included. Awesome!

There’s also a greeting from the author…

I love that the letter from the author conveys a bit about the origin and inspiration for the story. How cool is that?

The Trials Of Morrigan Crow By Jessica Townsend ($13.26)

Morrigan Crow is cursed. Having been born on Eventide, the unluckiest day for any child to be born, she’s blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks–and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on her eleventh birthday.
But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor.

It’s then that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city’s most prestigious organization: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart–an extraordinary talent that Morrigan insists she does not have. To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests–or she’ll have to leave the city to confront her deadly fate.

Perfect for fans of the Harry Potter series and Neil Gaiman, this fast-paced plot and imaginative world has a fresh new take on magic that will appeal to a new generation of readers.

The inside flaps of the book let’s you have an idea on what’s inside!

It’s a hard bound book with some illustrations inside. I love that the pages are smooth, so as the story. My daughter is really excited to get her hands on this book and I was happy that it came – it was in my Amazon cart for just in case!

And as always, the owl at the bottom wishes you to enjoy your adventure!

December theme is Abra Cadabra!

Looks like more magical mayhem is in store next month (you may want to see my book predictions here and grab that box!).

Owl Crate is always fun, enjoyable, and appropriate for young readers. My daughter got excited when she heard about the theme of this month’s box! She loves the pencils with the Harry Potter reference and we love everything HP! If you also have a young reader at home, this subscription is worth a try. Everything they send is high-quality, fun and interesting (and we liked the Amethyst, I just didn’t care for the imbalance on the card – how about some SCIENCE?). We can’t wait for the magic the next box will bring!

What did you think of the Owl Crate Jr. box this month?
