Literary Vacation Club is a subscription that sends one to two books plus items to tantalize all 5 senses. Each box also comes with bonus bookish goodies. This box covers all genres, except for Horror, Poetry, and Erotica. Prices range $14.99 to $29.99.

My earth-friendly side loves that all the packing products are recycled from other subscription boxes. There is a letter explaining why the CEO does this and that no two boxes will be packaged the same but will, of course, have only the best products to heighten your reading experience. The amount of tape on the package this month was a little disheartening because of how sloppy it looked and the effort that was needed to get to the items.

For this month’s theme, we have: Autumn Mountain Getaway. I’m not sure if the lines in the pictures are intentional or just poor quality, I will say that looking at fall pictures makes me want cooler weather.

DEAL: Get 10% off on your first box! Use coupon code WELCOME10.

A spoiler for the October box… Halloweentown. That would have been great if I hadn’t received the September box in the beginning of November.

Paintbrush by Hannah Bucchin ($9.95)

Mitchell Morrison and Josie Sedgwick have spent their whole lives at the Indian Paintbrush Community Village, a commune full of colorful characters tucked in the mountains of North Carolina, and they aren’t particularly close―at least, not anymore. Josie wishes she could spend all of her time at Paintbrush planting tomatoes, hiking the trails, or throwing giant communal birthday parties, while Mitchell can’t wait to escape the bizarre spiritual sharing and noisy community dinners. Luckily for both of them, high school graduation is just around the corner.

But when Mitchell’s mother makes a scandalous announcement that rocks the close-knit Paintbrush community, and Josie’s younger sister starts to make some dangerously bad decisions, the two find themselves leaning on each other for support―and looking at each other in a whole new light. Their childhood friendship blossoms in to something more as they deal with their insane families, but as graduation approaches, so does life in the real world, forcing Josie and Mitchell to figure out what, exactly, their relationship is―and if it can survive their very different plans for the future.

This book sounds like a good coming of age tale. I am excited to meet all of the colorful characters and see how this can take me to another world. I like knowing that it’s set in North Carolina which isn’t so far removed from my realm of knowledge, it will be easier to make it personal.

To See

Scarecrow Solar Figure, North Carolina Stamp and Ticket Bookmark. I could have saved myself money by hitting the local Dollar Tree and getting a Scarecrow Solar Figure. The bookmark and stamp were printed on a somewhat decent printer and the added curling ribbon did nothing to make me want to use this bookmark. I feel like this could have been made by a kindergartner at art and crafts time.

To Taste

Wild Cherry Hard Candies. I can honestly say I didn’t try these as they were rolling around the box, not contained in the very flimsy bag. Also, I cannot be too sure how clean the hands were that transferred these from a larger bag to this box sized bag. In general I don’t eat anything from a box that is not sealed in a factory.

To Touch

Crocheted Cozy Item. I assume this is a scarf with leaves on the ends but I am not absolutely sure. I do like the bright pink color.

To Smell

Cedarwood Lip Balm by Antiquity & Illusion. This handmade lip balm will help bring the smell of the mountains to your lips. Use these balms to keep your lips soft in the chilly weather.

Bonus items!

Fall Leaves Earrings. These are reminiscent of the mountains of North Carolina, and they bring beauty of fall wherever they go. This is one of a kind jewelry made by the curator of the box.

Literary Vacation Club Reading Passport…

This is kind of a cool way to keep track of the books you’ve read over the months of the year and to keep track of your thoughts on each one before handing out any recommendations. I like this better than using an app on my phone.

Literary Vacation Club is unique because they attempt to take all five senses for a trip. This month’s box made me feel like it was thrown together with very little consideration to the packaging. I like unique items but want them to have a quality that screams “show me off.” I’m not sure that the price of the books I received out weights the cost of this subscription. Hoping for better box contents next month!

1/5

Literary Vacation Club brings you a monthly reading experience to tantalize all 5 senses! They base all boxes on the concept of bibliotherapy - healing through literature - and by traveling to different bookish destinations, you can relieve stress in a fun and effective way! All of the books that they send are lesser known and most cannot be found in bookstores, almost guaranteeing that you will not already have the book, and you won't receive it elsewhere. You also receive items that cater to all 5 senses and connect to the book(s) and the theme to help create a 4D reading experience! Choose from two plans: The Weekender - 1 Book + an item to see + an item to hear + either an item to touch or an item to smell, or The Holiday - 1 to 2 Books + an item to see + an item to smell +an item to hear + an item to taste + an item to touch + a bonus bookish item.

Also, all proceeds go to help them sponsor Knitted Knockers, an organization that helps women with breast cancer.

I love this box! I have gotten it for months and have always enjoyed the handmade care that goes into it. The owner always makes the box feel personalized to me. I’m sorry you didn’t appreciate the effort. 🙁
