nmnl is a monthly Japanese beauty subscription box by the brains behind Tokyo Treat and Yume Twins. They promise to deliver a Japanese beauty experience curated by people familiar with the current trends in Japan.

DEAL: Save $3 on your first box! Use coupon code 3off.

The information booklet has information about the products. I wish this was more detailed to include ingredients as well as the actual brand names, as most nmnl items are lesser known brands I’ve never heard of or are very obscure.

Sailor Moon x Venus Spa Hair Fragrance — Hands down the hero item of the box. nmnl actually did post on Facebook earlier this summer when they were released asking if we wanted to see them in a future box, and actually managed to get them sent out to us. The set of five fragrances plus pouch originally retailed for around 7100 yen (so around $70 USD). These hair fragrances include collagen, keratin, and a variety of amino acids and plant extracts to add strength and shine to hair. The pink Sailor Moon version I was sent is “pink bouquets and baby peaches.” Four other variations, one for each of the other inner senshi, were sent out as well so it was a surprise!

Propolinse Sakura Mouthwash — Propolinse is a popular mouthwash in Japan. It uses propolis extract to prevent tooth decay. But the gross and fascinating thing about this mouthwash is that it reacts to the pH in your mouth and turns the clear mouthwash into a gross brown colour, making it look like you really are spitting out all the gross germs in your mouth! The flavour is like a very sweet and alcoholic cherry cough syrup, and while it’s not the most unpleasant thing I’ve tasted, it’s not something I want in my mouth for longer than 30 seconds! The box includes 6 single-use packets of the proper amount for a full gargle.

Pure Smile Sugar Skull Mask — A glow in the dark sheet mask! Really cool idea! This would be fun to do to scare someone… but I’m going to try it out and see how it works.

Japanese Print Powder Puff — A powder puff with a Japanese cherry blossom design print. I am gifting this so I didn’t open it but it looks to be a very nice traditional sort of powder puff. It’s a larger size so I think it’s meant to apply powder to the body rather than the face, but I’m sure either would work. I think this would look so pretty displayed on a vanity!

Sweets Sweets Lip Gloss — A sheer pinky red colour. I find that Japanese glosses tend to be very sheer colours without much pigment. It’s very different from the bolder styles here in North America!

I was actually pretty impressed with this month’s nmnl. I still think they have a way to go to be consistent in their boxes from month to month. I really like that this month’s hero item was something they actually kept their promise on to get for all of us. They still need to listen more to their userbase who are requesting more well known and trusted lines. These lines are being offered as prizes for extending your plan for example, but not for inclusion in the monthly boxes, which is a bit unfair to paying subscribers.
