Hook and a Book is a monthly book and crochet subscription box shipping from the UK. Each month’s box is curated around a book, and includes all the supplies needed to complete a crochet project themed on the book, plus a treat or two.

My box looked like it had a bit of a bumpy ride to reach me, but everything remained safely wrapped in tissue paper.

Here is everything in the box. In addition to the book and project supplies, the box includes a purple plastic envelope for holding patterns and a Twinings Blackberry & Blueberry tea bag.

September’s box features the book And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini ($9), an epic adventure story spanning decades.

Khaled Hosseini, the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations. In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most. Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe—from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos—the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page.

The crochet project is a delicate feather necklace and bracelet set designed by Jennifer Stiller. A small leaflet includes full pattern instructions.

And to complete your project, the box includes a hook, two balls of yarn, toggle and clasps. The description inside the box says that there are three balls of crochet thread in mixed colours, so perhaps it was a mistake that my box only contained two balls of thread?

This is the part of the review where I should reveal my lovely crochet creation.

The problem is, I don’t actually know how to crochet! Rather than wait until I have taught myself to crochet and attempted this project, which let’s face it could take years, I thought it better to post the review now. If unlike me you do know how to crochet, and you also like trying new patterns and reading, then the Hook and Book box could be the right fit for you.
