Play! by Sephora September 2017 Subscription Box Review

Play! by Sephora is a monthly subscription box that brings only the best and exclusive Sephora beauty and makeup samples. The subscription costs $10 per month, and you’ll get 5 deluxe beauty products, playlists, a fragrance bonus item, plus coupons you can use when you visit in-store.

Your subscription also entitles you to PLAY! Date meetups if your store participates. I don’t even have a Sephora (not even a JCP one) but this box totally excites me even without those experiences – I love the high end brands every month for just $10.

That little card is a PLAY!P ass that will get you 50 extra Beauty Insider points with a purchase from the box – in-store only.

The theme is “It’s Fall Good.”

This fold out poster shows a list of all the items included in this box plus beauty trivia and tips. You can access all of the information and also watch the videos right on the Sephora site or use the app to scan the sheet for more info!

Everything in my box !  See the spoilers for other variations here.

Something of note – without notice they’ve apparently discontinued the fragrance bonus item. Some members received fragrances this month, but not all. I still got 6 items this month, but one was a foil packet. And FYI – that screenshot above was pulled on 9/20, so it’s not like they changed things and we just didn’t notice.

The pouches are cute. Back to silky fabric this month – what are you using yours for? I feel it’s probably time for Sephora to mix up this item even more.

Briogeo Don’t Despair Repair Mask ($1.80)  This is a pretty frequent box item and it works great for my fine hair. Not everyone loves it but I like it! It uses argan and avocado oils to reduce frizz, which I sometimes have even with my fine hair

The foil packet is nice for travel, and I guess you don’t have to bring it back. Something to note – this product has no silicones, parabens, sulfates, or phthalates.

Algenist Genius Ultimate Anti-Aging Cream ($12.88) The first of two creams in my box! Algenist’s anti-aging cream is formulated to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and increase hydration. Let’s plump it up!

I think this cream has a springy/moussey texture and a nice scent to boost (not fragrancey). It uses alguronic acid, plant collagen, and microalgae oil and has some nice/interesting reviews where other users say it really works, so I’m going to concentrate on using this sample on my problem areas until it’s gone.

Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream ($6.75) This is such a great face cream that provides a full day of moisture!

It has all sorts of goodies that help boost radiance and skin hydration:

1. Lotus flower extract, sourced from Laos, defends against wrinkle-causing free radicals.

2. Blue-green algae extract helps to visibly minimize early signs of aging.

3. Hibiscus fruit extract boosts hydration.

4. Fig fruit extract helps to preserve ideal moisture levels.

5. Vitamin C is known for its antioxidant and protective properties.

6. Vitamin E helps soften the skin.

7. Vegetable glycerol attracts water and seals in moisture.

It’s not the first time I’ve used it and I hope it’s not the last. I was thrilled to find this in my box! Also just an FYI, it smells like cucumbers.

Wander Beauty Wanderout Lipstick in Wanderberry ($15) Both silky-smooth and long-lasting, this moisture-rich formula goes on smooth and dries down to a matte finish. It’s a full half size and not a dinky sample, and I can attest to its staying power – it goes to a nice stain on the lips after it wears and as a swatch? It’s there two days later. Really impressive.

Touch In Sol Metallist Liquid Foil & Glitter Eye Shadow Duo ($25 full size – so about $5?)  This didn’t come with a size, so I’m guessing about $5 for this mini. This is such a cool product, with a shimmery metallic foil and a full on glittery shadow too!

They all unscrew and you can use both or just one. The different textures really have different interplays with the light. This brand is new to me, and I do think it’s cool, but if I wanted to buy a full size, I’m thinking a drugstore brand might be the way to go for this not-every-day (at least for me!) product.

Sephora Contour Eye Pencil 12 Hour in Black ($4) This is a FANTASTIC eyeliner with a great quickly setting formula that stays fairly waterproof.

The eyeliner applies so easily and smoothly it was hard to mess up. I don’t know about getting a bunch of full-size pencils but if they made a little set of these travel size beauties, I’d be all over it. Still, I may not be able to resist purple shimmer/electric diva.

And the swatches! Doesn’t my arm look party ready for fall into winter?!

With a value of around $45, this is certainly one of the higher value boxes I’ve received from Sephora! I can’t say that I missed the perfume sample but I wish they had given everyone a head’s up about it (we got quite a few questions). Other pluses for me include the new to me Touch In Sol eyeshadow, a bright berry lipstick instead of a sad beige, and two face creams! While it’s a little frustrating to see so many versions of the monthly box, this is one of the months that I feel like my box was really matched to my profile!

Are you a Sephora Play subscriber? What did you think of the box this month??

Question, does one get points for reviews? I’m trying to decide which box. I currently get Birchbox. I’m afraid I’m a little confused about how Sephora does reward points. Can you help?

    • Hello Subscription

No points for reviews. You get 10 Sephora rewards points at every renewal.

You mean every year? Dang, how does one ever accrue points?

        Thank you!

No every month, but points at Sephora are typically gained by shopping for full size items! Even I didn’t have VIB status this year. Didn’t shop enough!
