Everything in the September OwlCrate JR. box!

FYI – my 8-year-old daughter wrote the rest of this review!.

Airplane Button Pin: I imagine this is what the plane looked like in this month’s book The Explorer – before the crash!

The Explorer by Katherine Rundell  ($11.61): From my kiddo: This is a really good book and it’s about 4 kids named Fred, Con, Max, and Lila who survived a plane crash in the Amazon and have to make it home. It seems impossible to live in the Amazon unprepared, but it seems someone has been there before……

………..and left a trail for them to follow.

From Boston Globe–Horn Book Award winner Katherine Rundell comes an exciting new novel about a group of kids who must survive in the Amazon after their plane crashes.

Fred, Con, Lila, and Max are on their way back to England from Manaus when the plane they’re on crashes and the pilot dies upon landing. For days they survive alone, until Fred finds a map that leads them to a ruined city, and to a secret.

This exploration book has a fun plot about a lost city. Lots of growing up to be had – and my daughter raced through it.

Letter and Autograph from the Author

The Explorer Bookmark

The author spent time in the Amazon rainforest.

Along with the author’s letter is a sticker bookplate you can place inside the front cover.

Scout Books Exploration Notes Bullet Journal ($5?) Great for sketching, you can write down or draw anything you see on your travels as an explorer. Feel free to include field notes and any other important stuff.

The inside has a bullet dot grid.

Boygirlparty.com Enamel Sloth Pin ($7?) From the kid – This really cute bookish pin is beautifully decorated and reminds me when there was a metal tray and we put colored beads in it and melted them so they produced a result somewhat like this.

The sloth plays a role in the story! He makes a nice pet!

A 15% off pins coupon was included too. I’m not crazy about coupons in a box for kids to open and enjoy.

eeBoo Natural & Earth Science Flash Cards ($8.95): This is a set of natural & earth science flash cards. On the back there are cool facts about the subjects on the cards with accompanying pictures.

Subjects range from mammals to minerals!

48 is quite a lot and the facts are fun and interesting, as are the illustrations.

Toysmith Clip-On Compass ($5.71): Be sure to take this on your adventures! Useful for finding your way back to camp.

This compass has a little clip and it’s easy to line up the directions on the compass.

My daughter had a great adventure with this month’s book and goodies! Everything was perfectly themed – and I love how this box really is gender neutral and appropriate for all kids to explore. In fact, my daughter has a little shelf of her Owlcrate Jr books to pass down to her brother, and they share everything from the box. With an estimated ~$12 for the pin & journal, I came in around $38 for this month’s box. We’re more than happy with that value – and my kids are always excited to get a new book!

The theme next month is WITCHES & WIZARDS!

What did you think of the Owl Crate Jr. box this month?
