Comic Bento is a monthly comic book subscription service that delivers graphic novels and comics each month. This is a great value because every month, you’ll receive at least $50 in books.

Special care is given to each box. To keep the books from jostling about, Comic Bento has all books packed together in plastic with cardboard to keep everything straight.

Five books from multiple publishers. Comic Bento did well including some with their offering this month.

Comic Bento includes a 2-sided card that gives you some insight into the books they sent. They also give some backstory as to why they chose the books within the subscription box. This month’s theme is “100% CREATOR OWNED.”

Comic Bento is great at providing variety while sticking to their theme.

Kaptara: Volume One: Fear Not, Tiny Alien – Image Comics – $9.98 cover price. Chip Zdarsky is one of the best writers in comics today. I imagine this book will be filled with all kinds of awesome since it’s all from the creative mind of Chip Zdarsky and with no limits.

Keith Kanga crash lands on KAPTARA, a world filled with danger and weird danger and dangerous weirdos! And if he can’t survive, then Earth, the place where YOU live, is doomed! Come check out this sci-fi comedy from Chip Zdarsky (SEX CRIMINALS) and Kagan McLeod (Infinite Kung-Fu). Collects KAPTARA #1-5.

Virgil – Image Comics – $9.99 cover price. Image comics is the place to go for independent comics. I really like the brutal art in this comic series.

  • Betrayed, beaten, and banished by his own, an outed cop fights his way across Jamaica to save his man and get revenge! Virgil thought he was safe on the police force, but his gun and his attitude can’t protect him from his own secret – he’s gay. For thirty years he’s had two lives. In the uniform he’s the toughest on the street. Out of uniform he’s a loving boyfriend. But when his own precinct turns on him, his worlds explodes. They put his name in the paper, raided his house, and took his lover. They left him bleeding in the ocean. They shouldn’t have left him alive.
  • Virgil is the next era of exploitation, following in the steps of Shaft and Django Unchained. Hard hitting crime noir given a fresh face but the same busted knuckles.

The Tick: Karma Tornado – New England Comics Press – $13.99 cover price. The Tick has been around for quite a while and the creator, Ben Edlund has been around every step of the way. Comics, cartoons, television and most recently; an Amazon streaming series. This book includes multiple writers and artists. I love that it’s black and white and the pages are not glossy.

This 128 page book presents the first five issues of Karma Tornado. There are not many first editions of this collection left. These Great Tick stories are based on original plot ideas from the Creator of the Tick Ben Edlund! Plus these stories are co-plotted and scripted by Chris (Jackson Publik from Cartoon Networks’ Venture Bros.) McCulloch. Meet such fascinating characters as The Time Traveling Fish; Omniputus; Super Pilgrim and more!

Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life: Volume 1 – ONI Press – $11.99 cover price. Bryan Lee O’Malley’s mega popular series spawned one of my favorite comic book adaptations to film of all time.

Scott Pilgrim’s life is totally sweet. He’s 23 years old, he’s in a rock band, he’s “between jobs,” and he’s dating a cute high school girl. Nothing could possibly go wrong, unless a seriously mind-blowing, dangerously fashionable, rollerblading delivery girl named Ramona Flowers starts cruising through his dreams and sailing by him at parties. Will Scott’s awesome life get turned upside-down? Will he have to face Ramona’s seven evil ex-boyfriends in battle? The short answer is yes. The long answer is Scott Pilgrim, Volume 1: Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life.

Headlocked: A Single Step – Quick Comics – $19.99 cover price. Comic Bento normally has 4 books in their box but this month we are treated with 5! Headlocked combines two things I thoroughly enjoy; comics and wrestling. The cover is by WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler.

The story of one young man’s quest to break into the world of professional wrestling, and his journey through the dark underside of violence, drugs and shocking surprises to get there! Comics’ first prime time dramatic series!

Comic Bento is such an awesome value! All five of these books were packaged well together and arrived in spectacular condition. As stated earlier, there is a theme but there’s also a ton of variety, and the theming of this box is pretty unique amongst comic subscriptions. The curator’s notes really bring the theme together, and that made this box even more awesome!

What did you think of this month’s Comic Bento theme?
