Birchbox is a beauty sampling subscription service that sends 5 new items each month so you can try before you buy. Birchbox is $10 a month and you can choose a monthly sample during selection time, let Birchbox decide, or pick a pre-curated box. Birchbox recently rolled out some new subscription options such as skip a month and receive points instead; choose a Spotlight Box; or Pick One, Skip One. This month I am reviewing the Spotlight Box, and this was one of several choices available for the upgraded $15 subscription price (and is different from the usual curated box that is still only $10 for subscribers.) This subscription option is still in Beta mode.

Want to know exactly what’s coming? Swap your personalized box for one of several curated boxes filled with samples that address specific beauty needs (i.e. frizzy hair or oily skin). Try out something you’ve had your eye on—or give a new trend a go! These options will change every month.

For more about these Beta options – check that info out here.

The people complained about their boring pink Spotlight boxes and Birchbox listened and made this month’s boxes pretty and patterned!

DEAL:For a limited time Birchbox is offering a free beauty gift with your first box when you use code SURPRISEME!

Even the bottom of the box got some love this month! There were words printed on the inside rim of the box, too.

I picked the Spotlight on: Beauty Basics 101 option because I really wanted the Tocca handcream!

The information card gives brief details on each item as well as the price if you were to buy the full size, plus a beauty tip.

This box was very similar in appearance to my regular Birchbox. I have received most of these items before but a couple were new-to-me. I especially love travel-sized hand creams, and keep them at work, in my purse, and by my bed.

Everything in my Spotlight on: Beauty Basics 101 box!

Tocca Crema de Mano in Bianca ($5) was the primary reason why I chose this box! Bianca has a floral green tea and lemon scent and the hand cream is perfect for work, where I wash my hands all the time. It doesn’t leave my hands greasy and is lightly scented so I feel like I’m using something weekend special even if it’s only a Tuesday.

Pixi by Petra Glow Tonic To-Go (60¢) is formulated for all skin types and I like that it was alcohol free. It had a very faint scent and I didn’t feel any irritation from this exfoliating pad.

I’ve tried Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè ($1.87) before and am always happy to see it show up in boxes! I used this fast-absorbing cream as a combination moisturizer/primer but it can also be used as a makeup remover, although make sure to follow with a cleanser afterwards. Dry spots on your body? Give this a go!

Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Masque ($6.60) Just a bit of this luscious smelling hair mask made my tresses silky smooth and soft. I use this type of product only once a week because it tends to weigh my hair down, but what a luxurious treat!

IPKN Radiant Cream Primer ($4.90) I just ordered the IPKN BB cream, which I recently sampled through Birchbox, but this sample was just ok. As far as sun protection is concerned, SPF 15 isn’t much to brag about, and while it left my skin glowy, once I applied foundation the effect was gone.

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner ($12.57) Basic black eyeliner is perfect for a beauty basics box. I personally prefer brown or grey shades but I braved the look to see how well this liner worked. It was pretty easy to apply but by the end of the day it looked like I wore back eye shadow on my lids. My oldest daughter will LOVE it though!

Here’s the tip up close. It is perfect if you are going for a cat eye effect.

Even I was able to make a straight line with this liner!

I really like that Birchbox takes several beauty concerns and curates a box to help with those needs. My Spotlight on: Beauty Basics 101 box had a nice variety of products and hit just about all of the major beauty areas, such as hair care, skincare, and makeup. The value for this box was around $31.54, which is double the price paid for the box. There are boxes that provide more bang for your buck for $15, however, at least you get to choose the spotlight box you desire out of several different selections, which is a plus.
