The Unicorn in the Barn by Jacqueline K. Ogburn, Illustrated by Rebecca Green – with author letter, autograph book plate, and art print. ($11.82)

The Unicorn in the Barn by Jacqueline K. Ogburn, Illustrated by Rebecca Green ($11.82)

For years people have claimed to see a mysterious white deer in the woods around Chinaberry Creek. It always gets away.
One evening, Eric Harper thinks he spots it. But a deer doesn’t have a coat that shimmers like a pearl. And a deer certainly isn’t born with an ivory horn curling from its forehead.
When Eric discovers the unicorn is hurt and being taken care of by the vet next door and her daughter, Allegra, his life is transformed.
A tender tale of love, loss, and the connections we make, The Unicorn in the Barn shows us that sometimes ordinary life takes extraordinary turns.

How did I miss that the girl in this book shares my daughter’s name? Not only is she a certified unicorn freak, I think this made her entire year.  I’ve been out of town but my husband reported that she snuck out of bed to read until midnight one night, and she admitted she couldn’t stop reading this book (and also the dictionary of mathematics).

There are brief illustrations in parts of the book. Lest you think this book is super feminine, the main character is a boy. It’s nicely gender neutral, like all of Owlcrate Jr.’s picks!

The name plate sticker can easily be placed in the front.

And a nice letter from the author (although same complaint as last month – hard to read for little kids – big authors, please remember that most children can’t read script! Mine can, but most cannot!).

There was also an art print included as a bonus!

Toysmith Unicorn Poop ($8.48)

Marvel at its magical glory!

It stretches! It sparkles! It’s magical! It’s UNICORN POO! (Also perfect for anyone older or younger than 16).

MudPuppy Owl Felt Bag Tag ($9.97)

Also in regular Owlcrate boxes this month, a fun owl bag tag!

Write your contact info in and affix it on any baggage that you give a hoot about!

Ooly 3d Colorables Dragon ($13.03)

This is a really fun activity – color, inflate, and you have a 3d toy!

Here it is inflated, pre-color.

And afterwards, a magnificent dragon!

My daughter went all out on this one!

My daughter is totally in love with this box – and has devoured every book! I felt that the theme this month was more cohesive, with just enough unicorn to make unicorn fanatics happy and not go overboard for everyone else! Highest value yet for this box, with over $43 in value plus items I didn’t count – the vinyl sticker, the awesome patch, the pin, and the extras that came with the book. This is the perfect subscription to keep both excited and reluctant readers rolling with new and important book selections!

The theme next month is INTO THE WOODS!
