My books arrived safely packed with paper to prevent them from moving around and my box was pretty heavy.

NOTE: I have listed the current selling price from Amazon.com.

Not Your Mother’s Slow Cooker Recipes for Entertaining by Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufman ($15.80) I love my slow-cooker and it gets used a lot, whether I’m assembling a stew before work on a cold winter’s day or “baking” a lasagna in the middle of a scorching summer. I’m not one for entertaining though, but I can use leftovers or take a dish to a pot luck so I am happy to have some new recipes to choose from.

The slow cooker is simply a must-have entertaining assistant. With these fabulous 300-plus recipes, you can offer your guests the kind of relaxed, welcoming, confident hospitality that comes from being able to prepare fresh, delicious food ahead of time.

The recipes are pretty straightforward and some have just a few steps while others are more labor intensive.

Homemade Doughnuts: Techniques and Recipes for Making Sublime Doughnuts in Your Home Kitchen by Kamal Grant ($18.55) I’ve never been much of a doughnut person but looking through the pictures and recipes in this book did make my mouth drool a bit. Every recipe had a coordinating full-color photograph and there were even a few recipes for other fried treats, such as churros and hushpuppies. Need a glaze or filling? You’ll find them here!

There’s nothing more satisfying than a doughnut. But no need to limit yourself to the bakery counter! With Homemade Doughnuts, Sublime Doughnuts chef Kamal Grant shows you how to make creative, delicious doughnuts in your home kitchen.

Inside you’ll find:

  • The doughnut-making techniques you’ll need to master: rolling the dough, cutting, hand shaping, frying, and more
  • Basic dough formulas for yeast doughnuts, cake doughnuts, fritters, biscuit-style doughnuts, and pie crusts to fry
  • Mouth-watering glazes, including Honey Glaze, Peanut Butter Glaze, and Lemon-Thyme Glaze
  • Delicious icings, including Salted Chocolate, Pistachio, Pink Lemonade, and Bourbon
  • Inspired fillings, including Apple Butter, Blueberry, Coffee Custard, and Lemon Curd
  • Accoutrements to put your doughnuts over the top: Almonds, Balsamic Vinegar Reduction, Candied Bacon, and more

Doughnuts aren’t just for special occasions, boardwalks, or carnivals: they’re for everyone! Doughnuts have been inspiring and influencing cultures, regions, and religions around the world for centuries. And although the vision of the doughnut has evolved and been “fancified” by cart owners and Top Chefs alike, one thing reigns true: everyone loves a good doughnut. With step-by-step tutorials, Homemade Doughnuts will show you the basics of doughnut making, baking techniques, and practical problem-solving tactics for creating bakery-like doughnuts at home. From the classic to modern food art, this book provides the lessons for creating a gamut of deliciousness.

Glazes, toppings, and fillings were included and sound delicious.

Each recipe had a picture to make your mouth water.

The recipes looked pretty simple and included info on cooking techniques, such as how to make funnel cakes.

I’m not into doughnuts and don’t own a deep fat fryer so I will pass that book along to someone who will enjoy it but I am looking forward to trying out some new recipes in my slow cooker, especially in this stifling heat. This month’s value was $34.35, which is amazing for the price paid for this subscription!
