Game Box Monthly is a board game subscription that is completely customisable! For $25 a month plus shipping, they will consider your existing board game collection, your preferences, and choose an indie board game just for you. The subscription is pretty no-frills – the box has cool packing tape patterned with the subscription’s logo and name!

BattleCon: Fate of Indines ($30) The first in a series of games for two-players. This a competitive card duelling game created by Brad Talton Jr. The illustrations are done by Nokomento and just from the box art, I’m loving it already.

The instruction guide is actually illustrated with two characters from the game walking you through an example scenario. This game is definitely more complicated than the ones I normally play — I don’t think I could teach myself this one, but I’m definitely bringing it along to the next board game night at the comic book store — I think as a group we can figure it out!

I squished as much as I could into this photo — there is a lot of stuff included in the box! The board itself is small making it a portable game you could easily carry along with you.

Here’s a closer look at the illustrations for the character markers. Fate includes 10 heroes, and expansions of the game include even more options.

This month’s game was a bit more advanced than what I would normally reach for, but it’s still a very cool game. The suggested play time for this is 30-60 minutes so it’s not a quick play. Strategy is definitely needed for this sort of game, but I like any game that encourages being creative and having expansion packs to add on is a good way to expand on a game without changing what works about it. I’m looking forward to learning how to play this!
