ShicaChic is a beauty box that promises sample sizes as well as one full-size item in a box each month. Past month’s boxes have included brands like Too Faced, Lorac, OPI, and Wonderbrow so I was really interested in checking them out! ShicaChic is $14.99 a month with free shipping to the US.

For international subscribers, I do want to let you know that they declare the full value of the box and I was charged customs/duty when I received my package. Depending on your customs regulations, you may or may not have to pay. Either way, use caution if you’re unsure. The owner of ShicaChic is looking for ways to avoid this happening in the future!

Petals in Bloom Gardenia Perfume Rollerball ($10.49) It took me some detective work to find this! The label on this says Vineyard Hills but it looks like it’s now known as Olivina. The packaging is older but it’s definitely the same product. It’s a single-note gardenia fragrance, which is quite nice and perfect for spring. Petals in Bloom is found at Walgreens and they have a bunch of other single notes available.

L’Oreal Matte Shadow Duo ($8.25) This duo is called “Animated.” The packaging is an older style and has since been revamped. The shadows are bright and pigmented and applied well. There was no protective plastic seal on this.

Colorescience Pro Sunforgettable Mineral Powder ($???) A mineralized sunscreen/foundation combo with an SPF 30 rating. It’s made of 12% titanium dioxide and 12% zinc oxide. I could not find this exact product on Colorescience’s website and I’m thinking it’s been replaced by the Brush on Sunscreen formula. Neither titanium dioxide or zinc oxide actually “expire” and are pretty stable from what I have found on Google. Since this product is likely discontinued, and I’m not sure how old this is, I probably won’t be trying it. It’s a bit too dark for my skin tone, anyway!

YBF Duo Lipgloss ($??) YBF is a brand that is often featured on HSN. This lipgloss was part of a larger kit that was once sold but has since been discontinued.

Dior Addict Lipstick Samples ($3) These four colors were introduced in 2015, and they’re a really pretty quad of pink shades. The kit includes a teensy little lip brush as well.

Most, if not all, of the products are discontinued and hard to even put a tangible value on due to age. Overall, I don’t think the box is worth $45. The most recognisable and high-end product was a sample you could pick up as a gift with purchase, and even that is two years old. The price point is attractive, and I admit that for $15 the value might be there if the items were current, on trend, or at least not discontinued. But there are other beauty boxes around that are a similar price point and I think ShicaChic has some catching up to do if they want to be competitive with other beauty boxes on the market right now.

Things like avoiding discontinued products, reaching out to smaller/newer/indie beauty small businesses who could use some exposure, focusing on current/trending high-end samples vs an old full-size product. Some of the most successful beauty boxes don’t shy away from providing high end samples as their main offering because people love to try new products without committing — it’s why I started subbing all those years ago to my first box!

I think ShicaChic has potential. It reminds me a bit of the early days of BoxyCharm which had some of the same struggles. It’s difficult to jump into a pool of already established boxes when you don’t have the connections yet. I’d be interested in seeing where this box is in a few months, once they have grown some more.
