Japan Crate is a monthly subscription box that helps you “experience the excitement of Japan every month through fun candy & snacks.” They have three subscription levels that start at $12 a month and offer 1, 3, 6, or 12-month plans that auto-renew at the end of the term. Japan Crate aims to send candy that is fun and exclusively available in Japan. Now, this box actually SHIPS from Japan!

DEAL: Save $3 on your first regular or premium crate with coupon code CANDY5.

There are 3 different subscription levels available: The Mini box includes 5 items, the Original box includes those items PLUS another 5 items, and the Premium box includes those 10 items PLUS another 5 items. This month I am reviewing the Premium box!

There was a Manga-zine that lists the contents of the box and other info. The cover included references to some of the snacks!

Japan Crate lists the snacks for all three box sizes plus gives a little info on what’s going on in Japan that month.

Now on to the products. My 13-year-old daughter especially loves this box and helped me test the snacks. Japan Crate now has an online shop but it is currently under construction.

Everything in the box! Japan Crate always manages to put together a colorful box!

Why can’t we have BBQ Cheetos here in America? These have that umami flavor that hits all the right spots and it’s just delicious and “better than regular Cheetos” according to my daughter.

Yaokin Mashuro is a big, twisty marshmallow that can be eaten as is or placed in a mug of hot cocoa. Fue Ramune Grape are grape soda flavored hard candies that have a hole in the middle to help you whistle! I can’t whistle for anything but I did it with these candies!

There was also a box with the fue ramune that had a monster figurine inside. It is in direct contrast to the cute little animals on the box!

Yaokin Garibori Spicy Garlic Ramen Have you ever eaten ramen straight out of the bag without cooking it? My girls used to do that and this is similar, except it tasted like potato chips! Meito Puku Puku Tai Strawberry is a wafer cookie with a strawberry cream filling. I had fun making it swim before eating it.

Mocchan Dango comes in three flavors: strawberry, green apple, and traditional, which was bland. It is soft, chewy, and glutinous and covered in sugar, like an extra sticky gummy.

Pokémon Bakauke are banana shaped rice crackers that have a salty and somewhat sweet corn soup flavor. Yaokin Popcorn made a nice, light snack and was tasty. It reminded me of when my sister used to put seasoned salt on our popcorn, but not as strong.

Umaibo Chocolate is like a giant puffed corn cereal stick covered in chocolate coating. It was gone in a flash.

Meito Curious George DIY Pudding Kit didn’t have any instructions and there wasn’t all that much DIY going on. My daughter figured out from the package that she should pour in milk to the fill line and then mix. The result was a slightly thickened milk that tasted like butterscotch pudding. I think it was supposed to go in the fridge to thicken a bit.

I ended up drinking it since I like butterscotch flavor!

Pudding Flavor Jelly was exactly that – a jelly that was milky and tasted like vanilla pudding! Choco Daifuku Marshmallow is a smooth marshmallow with a little chocolate in the middle. Daifuku are usually mochi filled with bean paste.

Takoyaki Naniwa was listed as a bonus item. It’s a takoyaki flavored crunchy ring snack that is full of umami flavor, salty and a bit sweet. Takoyaki is a fried octopus snack which may be why there were some tentacled chips mixed in with the rings. These weren’t fishy so maybe it gets its flavor from the Worcestershire-type of sauce. Yamato Aji Curry are crispy twists flavored with curry so I tried it, thought “tastes like curry”, and passed them along to my husband.

Sangaria Mix Fruit Juice had us all shook up since we had to shake the can to mix the fruity and milky ingredients together. It reminded me of a piña colada.

Lotte Black Koala’s March are little cookies with a chocolate cookie outside and solid cream filling inside, kind of like white chocolate. Proceeds help the Australian Koala Foundation.

Aww, I love cute snacks and my daughter LOVES koalas. Her dream is to hold a real one some day.

I always smile when I find Japan Crate in my mailbox! The snacks are always cute and fun and although I sometimes find something odd I mostly discover tasty treats. We have a blast trying all of our snacks each month, plus, some of these are not available online, which is too bad since we need BBQ flavored Cheetos. Next month the theme is “Spring Picnic” and I can’t wait to see what shows up in the box!

What item do you want to try from this month’s Japan Crate? Let me know in the comments!
