I go through one bottle of red and one bottle of white wine a month so the Variety Box is the best choice for me!

The theme this month is “Film Noir.” I received wines from France, Spain, and South Africa!

The Back Label is a mini-mag full of cool stuff – full-page intros with details on the wines, paired recipes for each, and even several articles on the theme and its relation to wine culture. I’m a newbie when it comes to wine appreciation and enjoy the insight this helpful magazine provides.

I don’t believe I’ve ever watched a film noir but there was some info on this genre in the magazine.

This month featured movie pairings and popcorn recipes.

Each wine has its own information page including the following:

  • Wine Name
  • Grape
  • Location
  • What you should do while drinking this wine (many tongue-in-cheek)
  • What to eat with the wine
  • What to listen to while you drink the wine
  • A cool chart showing a visual on the Acid, Body, Tannin, and Fruit of the wine
  • Wine Bouquet
  • Tasting Notes
  • Description
  • Recipe

Finally, there were a few mixed drink recipes in the back that sound noir-ish.

I received the following wines in my February box:

2016 Balance Savignon Blanc is a medium-bodied white wine from South Africa that was smooth and just right, not too sweet or dry. It smelled fruity and felt good in my mouth, no mouth-puckering here.

2014 Pierre et Papa is a white wine from France that is tropical in feel but not overly sweet. This one is made with Colombard and Ugni Blanc grapes.

2015 Celler el Masroig Vi Novell is a Spanish red with notes of strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries with a touch of cocoa, perfect for the month where chocolate covered strawberries are in abundance. In fact, I drank this in between bites of salted chocolate! Smooth and not too dry.

This is my third Wine Awesomeness Case and I now feel like I’m getting to know different varieties slowly but surely. I also seek out the wine tastings at my local store to see how they compare and these wines are really delicious. Most wines have always tasted either red or white but the magazine that goes along with this subscription helps me slow down and look for the noted flavors, acidity, and mouth feel and I am starting to be able to talk with more authority when discussing vino with my friends. The convenience of having wine delivered to my home is a big bonus but keep an eye on tracking because an adult 21 or over must be there to sign for the box!
