I’m thrilled to be bringing you all a review of Neko Box! Being Hello Subscription’s resident Japan-ophile (or would that be Nippon-ophile?) I jumped at the chance to be able to unbox Neko Box, which is a box of handcrafted homewares from Japan each month. They ship worldwide and each item is hand selected and thoughtfully curated to bring a taste of Japan to their subscribers’ doors. I’ve wanted to go to Japan for 20 years now, and I’ll get there one day – until then Neko Box is a great way to enjoy!

January’s theme is New Beginnings, and they have included a lot of beautiful stationery items!

Neko means Cat, and the little cat face logo is so cute!

Everything was packaged carefully in this birds nest sort of packing material. I haven’t seen this before, it’s quite nice!

Each Neko Box comes with the magazine Kawa. It’s a short guide featuring different topics about Japan. I love how this is laid out and found it really interesting.

Reading about all the different locales in Japan just furthers my desire to go there – although with everything I want to see, it would take me a long time.

The first items that caught my eye were the brightly colored washi bookmark – the koi fish are bright and cheerful! Washi paper has a strong, textured feeling to it. The postcard is of a traditional Edo-era woman and is made with the wood block printing technique, Ukiyo-e. I found a video on how they do Ukiyo-e printing, and it’s really neat to watch how each layer comes together to make the full scene.

This LIFE notebook contains the smoothest, most luxurious writing paper I’ve felt in a long time. It’s bound using a style of stitch called Ito-Toji and the cover is styled after old typewriter books. With it, we were sent a Japanese brush pen – great for practicing calligraphy, but it writes printed letters well too.

Love it!

These little tiny letter sets are my new favorite thing to come out of Japan. Perfect for jotting down a quick note to someone! The cheerful banner design is so sweet. And MT is the OG creator of washi tapes, another addiction I’ve had for the last couple of years. This pattern has a nice mint and silver striping design.

I loved Neko Box! I am a sucker for stationery, so this hit all my buttons. The value of the box is just under $40 and these are all items you can only find in Japan. I especially loved the notebook, and the washi tape but honestly I was excited to unbox absolutely everything. This box would be a wonderful gift for anyone you know who is interested in all things Japan or just other cultures in general.
