Show Us Your Spark is a “monthly box filled with ideas, inspiration, and items for pre-teen and teen girls,” designed to build strong girls. Spark means “self-acceptance, ready to tackle the world, being a good friend and so much more!”  As the side of the box notes, Spark wants girls to “Be awesome.  Be inspired.  Be you.”

Subscriptions start at $19.95/month, with discounts for multiple-month subscriptions. I reviewed this box with the help of my two daughters, aged 12 and 14.

Here is a peek at everything in the December box. This looks like so much fun!

Pasted inside the box are two cards. One gives the box’s theme – “I am Celebrating!” This is a great theme for December, a month with so many holidays. The other card is a journal prompt. In the Launch Box, Spark sent a journal… this is kind of a clever way to keep the journal theme running through all of the boxes. As I mentioned in that review, I really like giving the girls journal prompts. It makes them think a little harder and reflect on some things.

Show Us Your Spark boxes use multiple little cards to provide information about the box and enclosed items. This card provides more information about the theme for the box. The items in the box this month represent different celebrations from around the world.

Christmas Crackers are used in countries such as the England, Australia, and Canada. Traditionally, these are pulled apart and whoever ends up with the larger half gets the favors inside. My girls were not super excited about this… but I thought that learning about this tradition from other countries was pretty neat.

Next up was a Dreidel to celebrate Hanukkah. This is a nice wooden one! The dreidel also came with instructions for playing. The girls had fun playing with this – they played with M&Ms… and who doesn’t like to win those!

These are Peace Flags, part of New Year celebrations in Tibet.

Next up, Paper Lanterns to celebrate Chinese New Year. My girls love paper lanterns and these were such fun colors.

Last but not least, there was a series of Recipe Cards with recipes that are associated with Kwanzaa.

My daughters did not really love this box. Although I’m a big fan of learning about other cultures and countries, and holidays are a fun way to do that, the items in this box haven’t wowed them yet. They help me review other tween/teen boxes – and Show Us Your Spark boxes, while less expensive than some of those others, don’t really measure up. There’s very little in these boxes that the girls returned to – they played with the dreidel for about half an hour and hung up one of the lanterns, but the other things didn’t hold their interest.  Perhaps younger tweens would be more enthusiastic about the box.

I think this box would be better if it included more items that tweens and teens could actually keep, use, and enjoy for more than a few minutes. We’re looking forward to Show Us Your Spark improving as they grow.
