kiwi-crate-november-2016-box

Kiwi Crate is a kids’ craft and activity subscription that comes with everything you need to complete a great project or two, usually a pair of crafts that can be used as toys or playtime props. This box is geared for ages 5-8, and the projects are always age-appropriate, though some require more parental assistance than others.

Kiwi Crate is the most popular craft and activity subscription box for kids!

Everything in the Kiwi Crate! This month’s theme is Solar System! Kiwi Crate includes all necessary supplies for the featured activities, plus explore! magazine.

You really need very little from home to do the crafts. Usually, you only need a pair of scissors, but often the pieces are pre-cut, scored, or otherwise prepared for you already. The crate includes self-adhesive items or glue/glue dots if needed for the crafts.

An issue of explore! magazine is included in every Crate. It is full of fun content that brings the project to life.

There is always a comic featuring Steve the Kiwi and his pals, plus lots of historical and scientific information relating to the current theme.

explore! teaches kids some of the science at work behind the project.  It usually includes extension activities and some simple observational experiments to learn more about the principles underlying the project.

explore! has read, draw, learn, explore, eat, and make designated activities. Each expands on the theme of the box, whether through factoids, drawing activities, or recipes.

Our kids love to go through everything in the booklet first before starting the main project.

For parents, the activities are also a great way to keep your child entertained while you peruse the contents of the box and take a peek at the instructions for the crafts (it only takes a peek – they are always very clear and simple)!

The second booklet that comes in every crate is the actual instruction booklet for the crafts.

Between the three-part main craft, the extension projects, and the extra explorations, there is a lot to do in each Kiwi Crate!

The first craft was an “asteroid” launcher game – The kids built this cannon with virtually no assistance for launching little pom-poms!

This was a FUN and easy game – and allowed both of them to get some adding practice in (as well as some work on hand-eye coordination!). They stuck the numbered craters on the moon and had at it!

This next project was the main project in the box – a solar system mobile. Kids used the included supplies to paint planet and ship stickers in order to create the ornaments for the mobile.

My daughter made a checklist to ensure she painted each planet and planetoid. Just a cute example of how kids think when they’re engaged with this box!

She made sure to capture the essence of each planet! The instructions had advice on different techniques kids could use for watercolor painting.

What a magnificent mobile! We used the included laser cut wooden top and strung the strings through it, knotted them, and attached the stickers, as well as the little lantern with LED light bulb keychain. This is an awesome decoration for a kids room!

This month’s Kiwi Crate really captured the interest of our daughter. She loved building the solar system mobile even though it took more than one day (the paint needed to dry). She & her brother had a blast with the solar system game, too. In a world of worksheets at school, Kiwi Crate is just a fun, tactile STEM experience that’s totally worth it!
