Foodstirs is a monthly baking subscription box. Every month, you’ll receive family-oriented baking kits made with premium and real ingredients, free of preservatives, artificial dyes, and flavors.

The mixes use organic and non-GMO ingredients when available. You can also choose to subscribe monthly to their sugar cookie, brownie, or vanilla cupcake mix. You can choose to get the monthly kit or start your subscription with one of the kits in the store.

The theme for November was Goodie Goodie Gobble Cookies. When the treats have a holiday theme, this subscription comes way in advance of the holiday, so you’ll have it not only in time to make for the holiday itself but also in time for pre-holiday parties, if you like – we tend to save them for when we need a kid-friendly baking activity and a sweet treat.

The box includes a card letting you know the ingredients needed, tools, baking time, quantity, etc.

I like that it breaks down the ingredients you need twice (the second time being what you need at home). The kit includes all dry ingredients and decorative items – you supply eggs, butter, and other dairy when needed. Most projects call for a stick of butter or so, and icings usually require some yogurt.

The information card also has useful tips written on it – usually, there is a factoid and a couple of options for adding some extra flair or flavor to your creation.

The box includes complete nutritional and ingredients information. You will like the ingredients – never anything artificial, and the ingredients are primarily organic with only natural food dye. Nutrition information covers the actual contents of the Foodstirs kit, not the finished food item as prepared.

The instructions. They are step by step with a photo for each step. We’ve found them to be a little fussy at times – calling for butter at a certain temperature when it didn’t seem necessary, or requiring separation of eggs that are immediately blended back together – but this recipe was pretty straightforward.

The kit arrives packed in a box with paper squiggles.

Everything in the kit – cookie mix, frosting mix, food coloring, cookie cutter, and piping kit.

The dough was easy to prepare – we provided butter and egg. It cut easily and even withstood re-rolling well (we had to maximize our cookie yield)!

The cookies baked nicely, retaining their shamrock shape.

These are the cookies, prepared using the decorating advice provided on the included card. The feathers look nice, but the turkey itself is a little odd looking.

I shifted the orientation and added a little more detail for these. Though the feathers aren’t over the head of the turkey, I think these have a nicer overall presentation, due to the more realistic body of the turkey. The cookies tasted good, and the yogurt-based icing turns out a little less greasy and sweet than store bakery type frosting. The food coloring is less potent than artificial, and the colors tend to be less vibrant – but we are OK with that trade-off to get a more natural consumable.

The feedback on this subscription in the comments have been mixed – some people agree with us that the subscription is very pricey (the price is lower now than when the box first launched), others love it as a fun craft box for their kids. We do love the quality and taste of the mixes that form the base of each project, and you always get to eat the results!
