Birchbox is a beauty sampling subscription service that sends 5 new items each month so you can try before you buy. Birchbox is $10 a month and you can choose a monthly sample during selection time, let Birchbox decide, or pick a pre-curated box. This is a review of a regular, non-curated box and I did make a sample choice this month but the rest was a surprise. How well did it match the profile that I created when I signed up? Read on to find out!

DEAL: Use coupon code TWOFORONE to get a FREE bonus box with your first month!

This month’s theme is “New Year, New Perspective” and the items sent this month are supposed to help subscribers make new choices and help them be their best self.

The information card gives brief details on each item as well as the price if you were to buy the full size.

You can visit Birchbox.com/MyBox to easily see the details of your box, which I recommend because sometimes they have videos on the item product pages which I find useful.

Everything in my January box! I received 6 items in my box this month (score!). The shampoo leaked a bit during shipping but my box wasn’t a total mess and there was plenty of product still in the bottle.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo ($12) Right off the bat, the first product was worth more than the price paid for the box! Unfortunately, I don’t use dry shampoo, but I was happy to get a product that so many people rave about. I gave it a try before my morning shower (I wash my hair every day) and although it left a skunk stripe at first, after brushing I was happy to find that it didn’t leave a grey cast, which is a problem I have with most dry shampoos. It smelled good but my hair didn’t really feel clean; luckily my daughter will LOVE this product!

R+Co Oblivion Clarifying Shampoo ($4) and Restorative Gel Conditioner (96¢) were my sample choices this month. I have hard water and use a lot of product to try to force my fine hair into some semblance of style and I use a clarifying shampoo once a week. It cleaned well and had a pleasant scent. The conditioner was a gel and was the first non-creamy conditioner I have ever seen! I don’t think these were the best products for my fine hair but I won’t find my Holy Grail product without trying!

I wish I had found this product before I spent my points on another cleanser! I squirted a generous amount of Marcelle 3-in-1 Micellar Solution  ($3.74) on a cotton pad and it wiped away all of my eye makeup, quickly and without irritation. Since there was still some room on the pad (it was a big pad) I used the clean side on my skin to remove face makeup. I then used an oil cleanser on my face and was surprised to see that almost all the makeup was already gone! I love multitaskers, and the gentle cucumber scent was refreshing.

Coastal Scents Revealed Smoky Palette Sampler ($1.60) I have received this brand in boxes before and while it’s not my favorite they do have a wide range of color choices.

I received four warm neutral shades from this collection, which are colors that I prefer.

Here are the shades swatched. I went clockwise starting with the top left hand dark shade. I also used these on my lids and while I liked the colors I had a lot of fallout and had to clean up my under-eye area and cheeks afterwards.

I am glad that Birchbox sent two Pixi Glow Tonic To-Go (60¢) pads since they are convenient to stash in an overnight bag. I tried one after cleansing and didn’t experience any redness or irritation. I can’t say that it did anything for my skin but it didn’t bother it either. Aloe, witch hazel, and horse chestnut extract can be found in this 5% glycolic acid treatment.

I thought that Birchbox did a pretty good job of matching this month’s items to my profile! Does that mean each item was perfect and I loved them all? Nope, but that’s the point of sampling! Birchbox sends out many box variations each month. The value of this box was about $22.90, which isn’t too shabby. My favorite item this month was the Micellar water and I will need to add that to my favorites list for later!

I’m glad you found a favorite. I can’t wait for the dry shampoo trend to end.

Me too Anna! I want actual, clean hair and not hair perfume!
