Terra’s Kitchen is a meal kit and dinner subscription service that brings freshly prepped meal ingredients for your family. You get delicious and inventive meals, all made from the freshest ingredients.

Terra’s Kitchen offers flexible subscription with no long-term commitment. Weekly prepped meals starts at $74.99, so all you need to do is to cook and enjoy!

When you select your meals you have a certain amount of space available in your box (aka “your vessel”).

You’ll fill it with meals…

As well as additional add-on ingredients, snacks, and juices. Then your box will be shipped!

Unlike other meal services, Terra’s Kitchen reuses the shipping container. A pick-up is pre-scheduled for the next morning, so you simply set the container outside after you unpack the contents.

The container is super-heavy!  The drawers slide out – it’s a lot like the roll-on food service carts they use to hold airline meals.

All the individual ingredients are packed in trays of varying size, sealed, and numbered by recipe. Reusable hard-side cooler packs are interspersed among the food trays.

It’s recommended that you get everything into the refrigerator before 9 at night. When you are finished unloading, you seal the ice packs inside the container and set it out for pick-up – no call is necessary (I made the mistake of calling, and FedEx Ground showed up three times!).

We ordered four meals, plus some ground beef and extra pico de gallo and fruit.

The recipe cards are really beautiful and come on thick matte cardstock. They list servings, prep time, calories, allergens, and even mention those nutrients of which the meal is a good source.

The back of the card has the step-by-step recipe, including items you need from your kitchen (such as oil and cooking equipment). They even provide a wine and beer recommendation to pair with each meal!

Steak Fajita Rice Bowl. 30 minutes, 784 calories per serving.

The fresh avocado and cilantro added a nice counterpoint to the rich flavor of the beef and sauteed onions and peppers. It’s hard to see, but there is a mound of rice under that mountain of beef! The flavor was good, but the grass-fed beef had a lot of chew to it, even more than other grass-fed I’ve had recently. This was a fairly simple dish to throw together.

Grilled Chicken Tacos With Avocado Goat Cheese Sauce. 30 minutes, 439 calories per serving.

These were very tasty, and the chicken was superb in both taste and texture. The avocado and goat cheese added a lovely tart creaminess – it felt almost like a Greek dish but for the tortilla in place of pita. The pico was a little heavy on the onion, but it had nice bits of jalapeno and cilantro. I thought it a little much that the instructions called for a food processor, as most subscribers to a prepped food kit might not have one or be inclined to get it dirty just for that. I have a processor, but I opted for the stick blender instead.

Chicken Schnitzel With Sweet & Sour Apple Cabbage. 20 minutes, 378 calories per serving.

terras-kitchen-november-2016-5

We loved this preparation, and the kids went crazy for the chicken. The breading technique worked so well that everyone thought they were pre-made tenders!  It was also a very easy way to make breaded chicken. The cabbage was a nice complement, with a great crunch and a nice balance of sour and sweet – the parsley really worked well in it, too.

Asian Beef and Broccoli. 30 minutes, 746 calories per minute.

terras-kitchen-november-2016-1

The seasoning on this dish wasn’t very powerful. The flavor of the beef really shined through, but it didn’t really showcase the Asian sauce.  Again, the grass-fed skirt steak was fairly chewy – not tough, just took awhile to chew.  This dish was very easy to throw together.

Ground Beef: I made burgers with our ground beef. It had excellent texture and flavor, and it cooked fairly lean, but with enough fat to cook well and stay juicy.

Pineapple Spears: These were wonderful. Every bit of eye and core was removed, so everything was edible. The pineapple was sweet and ripe.

Mangoes & Blueberries: Each tub had fewer than a dozen blueberries, with mango cubes making up most of the fruit. The mango was a little firm, but good quality.

Pico de Gallo: This was tasty, but a little heavy on the onion. We liked the cilantro and jalapeno, and it was definitely easier than making it from scratch.

The pineapple was the star among the fruits.

The pico was great to have on hand – I’m glad we got a second tub!

We enjoyed our meals from Terra’s Kitchen – everything was fresh and high quality.  The packing was odd (I’m not sure it is any better environmentally since the container is shipped twice and everything is individually wrapped), but it worked well to keep the food fresh.  The recipes were simple and relied on the natural flavor of the ingredients. I would’ve liked a heavier hand with the seasonings, particularly on the stir fry dish.  The prepped ingredients did save some time, especially not having to make the pico de gallo from scratch – but they won’t last as long in the fridge, so this is a box for eating as soon as possible, not spreading out over the week.
