Things have changed this month. Instead of the pamphlet and the hand written note, we have a bookmark. Side one has ways to stay in touch via social media .

Quotes and a picture of the book are found on the back. I cannot for the life of me figure out where these quotes are taken from, they are not from the book jackets.

Mind of Winter By Laura Kasischke ($14.03)

Laura Kasischke, the critically acclaimed and nationally bestselling poet and author of The Raising, returns Mind of Winter, a dark and chilling thriller that combines domestic drama with elements of psychological suspense and horror—an addictive tale of denial and guilt that is part Joyce Carol Oates and part Chris Bohjalian.

On a snowy Christmas morning, Holly Judge awakens with the fragments of a nightmare floating on the edge of her consciousness. Something followed them from Russia. Thirteen years ago, she and her husband Eric adopted baby Tatty, their pretty, black-haired Rapunzel, from the Pokrovka Orphanage #2. Now, at fifteen, Tatiana is more beautiful than ever—and disturbingly erratic.

As a blizzard rages outside, Holly and Tatiana are alone. With each passing hour, Tatiana’s mood darkens, and her behavior becomes increasingly frightening . . . until Holly finds she no longer recognizes her daughter.

This book sounds chilling and perhaps a bit nightmare-ish. I can’t wait to see if it’s as thought provoking as the snip-its of reviews claim.

Rooms by Lauren Oliver ($17.99)

The New York Times bestselling author of Before I Fall and the Delirium trilogy makes her brilliant adult debut with this mesmerizing story in the tradition of The Lovely Bones, Her Fearful Symmetry, and The Ocean at the End of the Lane—a tale of family, ghosts, secrets, and mystery, in which the lives of the living and the dead intersect in shocking, surprising, and moving ways.

Wealthy Richard Walker has just died, leaving behind his country house full of rooms packed with the detritus of a lifetime. His estranged family—bitter ex-wife Caroline, troubled teenage son Trenton, and unforgiving daughter Minna—have arrived for their inheritance.

But the Walkers are not alone. Prim Alice and the cynical Sandra, long dead former residents bound to the house, linger within its claustrophobic walls. Jostling for space, memory, and supremacy, they observe the family, trading barbs and reminiscences about their past lives. Though their voices cannot be heard, Alice and Sandra speak through the house itself—in the hiss of the radiator, a creak in the stairs, the dimming of a light bulb.

The living and dead are each haunted by painful truths that will soon surface with explosive force. When a new ghost appears, and Trenton begins to communicate with her, the spirit and human worlds collide—with cataclysmic results.

Elegantly constructed and brilliantly paced, Rooms is an enticing and imaginative ghost story and a searing family drama that is as haunting as it is resonant.

I can’t wait to read this book where the house is the voice of the ghosts. I”m hoping that it’s as fast paced and as well-written as the critics claim. I want it to captivate me within the first 3 chapters.

I love that both book jackets scream winter, I feel like I should be cozening up with a blanket and cup of hot tea. I am a little sad that there isn’t a hand written note included in this month but I love the high quality print job on the bookmark. I love that each month BookCase.Club gets new to me authors and is normally spot on about the selections they send me. With 2017 fast approaching my goal is to read at least 24 books for the year, with this subscription that should be easy and enjoyable. I’m beginning to love that each selection is a little bit older because that normally means there are more than one or two books available from each author. BookCase.Club helps to keep my love of reading growing by not allowing me to become bored or too dependent on any one author while still playing to my favorite genre.
