Birchbox is a beauty sampling subscription service that sends 5 new items each month so you can try before you buy. Birchbox is $10 a month and you can choose a monthly sample during selection time, let Birchbox decide, or pick a pre-curated box. This is a review of a regular, non-curated box and I did not make a sample choice this month so each item was a surprise. How well did it match the profile that I created when I signed up? Read on to find out!

This month’s theme is “Shine On!” and the items sent this month are supposed to help me shine bright like a diamond during the hustle and bustle of the busiest season of all.

The information card gives brief details on each item as well as the price if you were to buy the full size.

You can visit Birchbox.com/MyBox to easily see the details of your box, which I recommend because sometimes they have videos on the item product pages which I find useful.

Everything in my December box!

This month everyone received gift tags and a bonus mirror.

This will come in handy for touch ups on the go!

Ardency Inn Modster Smooth Ride Supercharged Eyeliner in Black ($8) is part of a duo and oh how I would have loved to have received the other shade (brown) since black is too harsh for my coloring and age. I had my profile set to “classic” and changed it to “natural” to see if that helps for future boxes. As for the formula, it went on pretty smoothly and stayed put. I swatched it below and when I tried to wipe it off it wouldn’t budge!

I love CC creams (especially Supergoop!) and prefer the sunscreen benefits and less coverage as opposed to foundation but Marcelle CC Cream SPF 35 Complete Correction in Golden Glow ($7.47) is too warm for my cool skin tone, which is disappointing because I purchased the full-size on Black Friday! I did like the golden specks though. Maybe I can use this in the summer. Bummer.

Here’s the CC cream and eyeliner swatched on my arm. I rubbed some of the cream in at the top but it still looks pretty noticeable.

Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume (no size given, $4?) is interesting because of its single note: cetalox, a synthetic version of ambergris, a substance found in the intestines of sperm whales. On me, it smells like a warm, clean version of rubbing alcohol but my younger daughter loves it. According to Fragrantica, this is a floral woody musk.

I love the packaging of Amika products and their Bombshell Blowout Spray ($3) looks hippie chic. I have fine, flat hair and this spray helped give it some oomph, at least while my blowout was still fresh. Plus it smells nice and makes me smile every time I see the bottle!

The Organic Pharmacy Double Rose Rejuvenating Face Cream ($12.32) has a floral fragrance and is moisturizing but not too heavy. It’s supposed to sooth sensitive skin and reduce broken capillaries, and I have both of the above. It’s made with “92.05%” organic ingredients such as aloe, coconut oil, and shea butter.

I thought that Birchbox did a pretty good job of matching this month’s items to my profile! Does that mean each item was perfect and I loved them all? Nope, but that’s the point of sampling! Birchbox sends out many different box variations each month. The value of this box was about $34.79, not including the mirror and gift tags, and that makes me happy all over again.
