RawSpiceBar is a monthly spice blend subscription. Every month for $6 you’ll receive small batch, freshly ground spice blends by top chefs for home cooks, plus recipes to create authentic cuisine with the spices. They are launching the shop soon to buy more of your favorite spices!  I really look forward to seeing their inventory — the subscription picks have been great, and I want to see their whole catalog of blends.

Each month, you’ll receive three freshly ground spice mixes that can be used to create dishes evocative of the featured region of the world. The October 2016 shipment featured the food and spices of Oktoberfest in Bavaria (southern Germany).

Every year, Bavarians celebrate Oktoberfest by drinking lots of beer, eating lots of mustard and pretzels and serving it all with a side of schnitzel. Sounds good to me! I can’t wait to bring a little bit of Bavaria to my kitchen in Texas.

To spice up our Oktoberfest, Raw Spice Bar included the following spices: caraway, fennel and anise bread spices, horseradish and mustard seeds and schnitzel spices. Sounds great.

Raw Spice Bar’s Caraway, Fennel and Anise Bread Spices contained caraway seeds, fennel seeds, star anise, coriander and other spices.

Raw Spice Bar included a recipe for Caraway Cheese Soft Pretzels that features the Caraway, Fennel, and Anise Bread spices.

Raw Spice Bar’s Horseradish and Mustard Seeds contained toasted brown mustard seeds, toasted yellow mustard seeds and horseradish powder.

I couldn’t wait to try this recipe! I love cabbage, horseradish, and mustard, so I thought this looked fantastic. It also reminded me of the time I spent a couple of months at a Goethe Institut in Bavaria. I must have eaten cabbage for every meal when I was there!

I was surprised that these schnitzel spices smelled so heavily of juniper berries. Do juniper trees grow in Germany? Clearly, I need to return to find out! In addition to the juniper berries, this mix contains cayenne peppers, bay leaves, black peppercorns and other spices.

To celebrate Oktoberfest, I made the Horseradish and Mustard Cabbage and the German Chicken Schnitzel.

The perfectly seasoned chicken was moist and crisp. It was a huge hit with my family. The cabbage was a huge hit with me. It has been ages since I’ve had cooked cabbage, and as I suspected, it reminded me of the time I spent in Murnau am Staffelsee years ago. Yum!

RawSpiceBar’s blends provided a wonderful opportunity for my family to come together to eat delicious homemade food all while experiencing the cuisine of Germany. We loved the opportunity to share a meal and reminisce about fun times we’ve had together.
