The theme for October 2016 was Drawing with Soft Pastels Inspired by Edgar Degas!
The box arrived along with a helpful letter that detailed everything you need to know to get started.
Both of this month’s inspirations were printed on heavyweight card stock.
I especially loved the tutus in The Green Dancer.
My first set of soft pastels! How exciting! When I first received these, I had no idea what to do with them. I’m so glad this subscription came with instructional videos online! They were superb. They offered not only directions on how to complete the art project itself, but also helpful historical background information about Edgar Degas and how his work is similar yet distinct from the work of other impressionists (and why he didn’t consider himself one at all!).
In addition to the soft pastels, this month’s box also included a pencil, eraser, EXPO marker, blue painter’s tape and a pouch to store them in.
The subscription went beyond tools in delivering everything you’d need to complete the project, including a large piece of butcher paper to protect your table.
I was especially glad to see these pieces of scratch paper for practice.
They also included three pieces of pastel paper to use for your final project(s).
This month also included a piece of plexiglass that arrived with protective blue stickers on both sides.
This is my second month receiving and completing an art project in Indigo Artbox. My experience with their first box was so fantastic that I couldn’t wait to get started with my second. When I opened my first box, though, I was a bit nervous when I started. It had been almost three decades since my last art class. Even though I loved art as a young child, once I got to middle school, all of my elective time became taken up with music classes. So instead of learning how to make my own art, I had to make do looking at artwork that other people had made. When my first box arrived, I was thrilled to finally get to learn how to produce artwork myself. Now that I’m on my second box, I couldn’t wait to get started. Indigo Artbox’s instruction is superb, and as I can attest, they do an excellent job teaching anyone everything they have to know to create their own artistic masterpieces. (Plus, there are few things more relaxing and satisfying then taking some hours for yourself to create art, as I found out last month!)
After making a rough sketch on the enclosed plexiglass using the Pink Dancer by Edgar Degas as a guide, I used my pencil as a measurement tool to recreate the image outline on one of the soft pastel papers.
Next, I got to work playing around with techniques that could prove handy when working with soft pastels.
After that introduction, the online tutorial walked me through how to create my own piece of art inspired by Degas. I loved the directions! I thought the video was extremely well done, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled with the result! I’m equally thrilled that now I have a set of soft pastels that I can use again and again to continue to play around with the techniques I learned from Indigo Artbox. It would be impossible for me to overemphasize how much I love Indigo Artbox.
Have you tried Indigo Artbox yet? How did your project turn out?
