The theme for October was Rustic Italian! The box arrived full of things to help you produce a delicious taste of the Italian countryside: a mezzaluna, gnocchi board, tomato sauce, porcini mushrooms and pasta.

The recipe book included gorgeous color photographs of all of the box’s ingredients along with a number of delicious sounding recipes that utilized the enclosed ingredients.
Fox Run’s Mezzaluna ($11.45) put a huge smile on my face. When I was in grad school, I entertained a lot. Since I had very little money, I couldn’t afford fancy kitchen tools that would have made my life easier; all of my money went into the food itself. The one thing I longed for more than anything in the world was a mezzaluna so that I could chop up herbs faster. I had forgotten about this altogether until the day I opened my Rustic Italian Hamptons Lane box. Well, thanks to Hamptons Lane, I’ve finally arrived! Now I’ll be able to chop up all of my herbs in a snap.
I’m excited to learn how to make gnocchi with Cousin Liana’s Gnocchi Board ($4.98). Since I’ve never thought about making gnocchi before, I never knew there was a special tool involved. I just always thought you used your thumb. Anyhow, the board claims that having ridges on your gnocchi allows your gnocchi to hold more sauce which is always a good thing as far as I’m concerned. I can’t wait to try it out!
Pianogrillo’s Salsa Di Pomodoro Ciliegino (approximately $3.85) is made from cherry tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, salt, basil and celery. It has a rich tomato flavor which is perfect on pasta.
I love the large, rigged shape of Marella’s Organic Zucchette ($7). These little pumpkins arrived just in time for Halloween. How seasonally appropriate!
Urbani’s Dried Porcini Mushrooms ($6.45) are dried in the old Italian way. These Italian mushrooms have a nice nutty flavor that lends itself well to an array of Italian dishes.
Since I wanted to use all of the ingredients, I chose to make Zucchette with Gardener’s Sauce. I thought it was absolutely delicious! As my son’s French tutor said, it tasted very fresh and smooth. The shaved parmesan added a lot to the dish. Yum!
This month Hamptons Lane enclosed a card advertising a number of additional tools, condiments and treats that subscribers may be interested in purchasing to augment what they received in the Rustic Italian Box.
As always, I thought this installment from Hamptons Lane was a fun box that contained a number of delicious recipes. Unfortunately, though, the value of the items in this box were a lot lower than the cost of the box. It’s too bad because the recipes were great, and the suggested techniques and tools always make for nice date nights at home with my husband.
