Bokksu is a premium snack box that features authentic Japanese snacks, as well as a tea pairing to go with it. The items are what you can’t easily find here across the pond, so trying them is a real treat and always a fun experience! I love learning about the different regions of Japan, too. Last month’s box was my first and I really enjoyed it, so I’m excited to see what this month has in store.

Bokksu also ships to Canada! And shipping is only $5 which is super reasonable!

Japanese folklore is heavily influenced by the two primary religions of Japan, Shintoism, and Buddhism. For example, folktales in Japan center around animals due to the Shinto belief that kami (spirits) inhabit all creatures and objects. The animal spirits in these folktales are portrayed as either kind and helpful or mischievous and crafty. Two popular animals that frequently fall into this dichotomy and end up in humorous situations ate the shape-shifting Tanuki (raccoon dog) and the wily Kitsume (fox). To give you a deeper understanding of Japanes folklore and culture.

Hakata Mentai (shimp senbei). Japanese people believe that shrimp is a symbol of longevity because of their long whiskers and curved bodies. These crisps were very strong smelling to the point that I could not taste them, however, my father loved them and is looking on Amazon to find the exact or a similar item.

Humamon Cookies by Hogaya is delish! In the past, bears were said to have supernatural powers due to their ferocity. Nowadays, bears have also become symbols of cuteness, as is shown by this cookie baked in the likeness of Kumamon Bear mascot from Kumamoto Prefecture. The butter cookie is better than the choco flavor, sweet and crispy and utterly delicious.

So there were three tea bags but I couldn’t resist… I have a slight tea addiction. I thought this was amazing, steaming tea prevents oxidation of the leaves and preserves the tea’s fresh taste and vivid green color. This organic sencha tea has grassy or pine-like flavor that is refreshing and invigorating. A bit weak in my opinion but still pretty darn good.

Saku Saku Panda from Kabaya Foods. Though not native to Japan, pandas have captured Japanese people’s hearts since China first gifted Japan two pandas in 1972. Saku Saku means crunchy in Japanese and is a perfect name for this delicious and crumbly chocolate panda cookie.

Dream Animals by Ginbis. Dream Animals is a beloved cookie snack enjoyed by Japanese people throughout their childhood. Every cutely-shaped animal cookie has its English namesake stamped onto it., which adds to the fun as you pop each buttery cookie into your mouth.

Kitsune’s Tail from Akai Ribon. Kitsune are said to possess superior intellect and gain power to shape-shift after living for 100 years, so they often play the roles of tricksters and seducers in folklore. Kitsune’s Tail is a flaky pie that is topped with maple white chocolate and baked into the shape of a fox cub’s tail.

Bokksu was such a fun box! Learning about another culture and getting to taste some wonderful treats was a perfect combination. I loved that pretty much every item has a rich buttery flavor and was sweet without being overly sweet. The green tea was easily my favorite item, but as I mentioned before I love tea! This tea was a bit mild for my palate but the quality blew me away. I will be searching for the Panda cookies because they were amazing…sweet, salty and crunchy all rolled into one perfect treat. I also liked the hand written note that I received with this box because it made me feel so special. I look forward to seeing what other items will come in future boxes.
