Everything is packed nicely with tissue and padding.

The glass jars were wrapped in bubblewrap underneath. I thought it showed great care that the various items had specialized packaging tailored to the item – this isn’t a “throw in more squiggles and hope for the best” operation.

The theme for this month is Urban Orchard. The orchard theme tied in with the flavors of the cocktail ingredients, and the honey is actually produced by urban bees! The information card gives you details about each item, as well as their retail value.

Besides tools and glassware, you’ll also get recipe cards and ingredients to make that perfect cocktail! They included recipes for three drinks, each based on a different liquor. I love that they don’t require any specialty liqueurs or exotic ingredients – other than the ones included in the box. All I needed to add were lemon juice, lime juice, and ice. In fact, this set of drinks was really easy to make because they each used the same ration of honey and bitters – I only needed to swap out the citrus and liquor for each.

The shrub mix included its own booklet of recipes, too!

Mad Urban Bees Urban Raw Honey ($14 on card, $34 for a pack of 3): This honey is produced by bees “combing” the streets and parks of Madison, Wisconsin for flowers. It is raw and unfiltered, with a light taste and a slight menthol character.

Bittercube Bitters Cherry Bark Vanilla Bitters ($10): Very delicious bitters! Surprisingly versatile, this variety of Bittercube went well in each of the drinks and had a pleasant, balanced taste with a bit of Cherry Vanilla Coke type flavor.

Mad Maiden Shrub Orchard Overload Shrub ($15): We love shrubs! They have a very refreshing character, and the vinegar taste itself fades into the background. This blend is fairly tart, much like cranberry juice cocktail.

Viski Hammered Steel Shaker ($30): This tall shaker has ample room to mix a couple tall drinks at once. The sides are gently dimpled, adding a beautiful shimmer and enhancing the grip.

The construction is the classic three-piece shaker, good for both two-piece shaker pouring and strained serving.

The Irish Buzz: This compact drink blends Irish Whiskey with the Urban Honey, Bittercube, and some lemon juice – we used Jameson’s for the whiskey. This as quite refreshing, and I loved the unusual combo of lemon and Irish whiskey, as it created a bright and smoky blend that was quite unique. The honey and Bittercube were very subtle and paired well with the whiskey, lending a bit of Drambuie-like flair.  mixology-monthly-september-2016-3

Cherry Shrubbe-rye: Rye was extremely popular pre-prohibition, and it is now making a comeback. This drink was decent, but I think the bold and tart berry flavors of the shrub really call for a clear liquor. Still, the honey paired really well with the rye, making a lovely platform for the tartness of the shrub.

Abejas y Cerezas: This combo blended tequila and lime with the honey and Bittercube. The result was much like a Margarita in flavor, but with a lovely cloying feel from the honey, as well as a more nuanced tartness. I liked this drink quite a bit, as it had the appeal of a Margarita with a richer palette of flavors.

I like the concept of this subscription. Many of us like mixed drinks, but we are untrained and have no idea what we need to set up a decent home bar. This box gives you the professional gear and some high-end ingredients and know-how to get you started. It is a great way to build out your home bar, learning and sampling some delicious recipes along the way!

FYI – Save 15% on your first box with coupon code HELLOSUB.
