Holly Journals is a subscription for the journal lover. It comes with a handmade journal and every journaling thing you will need each month. These journals are completely handmade, and everything is coordinated to a specific theme like summer, etc. Boxes are sent out the last week of the previous month so they will arrive in time to start off a new month with a new journal. This review is of the September box but even though we’re into October I don’t mind at all – I’ve been itching to get back into journaling again! (Blame my foray into the planner culture earlier this year.)

Everything was hidden under black tissue, with the information card on top.

The card is a letter from creator Holly Rose – the September theme is about being smart! There’s information on where to find more prompts as well as social media and a contest.

I am loving this red, white, and black theme already!

img_4931

The theme continues right onto the journal’s cover, and I spy some pens tucked along the side!

The journals themselves are 50 pages (100 doublesided) and are completely handmade. The cover is a watercolour print of a tree with a very clever quote! The back is plain/natural card and the coils are strong and secure.

I took a lot of pictures of the inside because I’m seriously in awe. Every single page is completely different. There are cards, envelopes, pouches, patterns, lines, and everything is the same red/white/black (and a bit of grey) color scheme. That red and white chevron page? Actually a skinny envelope for tucking in receipts, bookmarks, a letter, or concert tickets.

There are also plenty of lined pages in both large and small sizes. Here’s another envelope, and I love that red paper!

img_4935

I’ve already marked the Place/Comments card to write down some of the new restaurants I’ve tried lately – putting the name of the restaurant and then some comments about the food I tried!

img_4937

There are five or six of these beautiful quote cards throughout the journal. They really tie the smart theme together!

img_4938

Last page photo, I promise! There are also a few of these mini bingo cards (I think that’s what they’re meant to be!) tucked in as well.

img_4939

We were also sent a long list of prompts for journaling. I honestly need things like this, especially if I’m going to fill in an entire journal in one month! Up in the corner is a journal charm clip – you clip this onto the rings of your journal for an added touch. This charm matches the journal’s colour scheme perfectly!

Tucked underneath the journal was a vellum envelope containing a whole stash of coordinating goodies, as well as the pens I spied earlier.

img_4942

Here’s what was included in the envelope! A variety of labels both plain and accented, some gift tags, and paper clips and bull clips as well. Paper clips make awesome bookmarks, or for clipping items when you don’t want to permanently attach them to a page. The red and black pens are a nice gel tip that write smoothly. The white Gelly Roll pen is PERFECT for using on the darker pages included in the journal.

We were also sent a disposable fountain pen! The ink cartridge was included (I had to unscrew the nib) and once it’s done you just toss the entire pen. I’ve never used a fountain pen before, but it wrote smoothly and was fun to use.

img_4945

The Gelly Roll pen works great! (And yes, I’m already rocking the cute journal charm!)

img_4946

I used the other three pens; they all write really smooth. The fountain pen is just super cool to use.

I’m so blown away by my new Holly Journal! It’s absolutely gorgeous and I’ve already written a few pages in it. I like journaling because there’s no pressure to write in it every day. The included prompts were, to me, a huge help. I loved the pens included and the theme was great – it actually is a good September/back to school kind of theme with a twist! I think the care and creativity that goes into a project like this is definitely worth the value, and while I don’t see myself managing to fill mine in a month, I know people who go through journals monthly or even faster than that and the subscription model would work great for them.

That’s a really nice subscription. Kind of pricey but pretty worth it.
