Y’all!  It’s meat in a box!!  Meat on a stick has always been awesome………but now it has been topped, by meat in a box!

The sides of the box were printed with witty meatisms.

Plaid Cow (10)

No, mystery meat is not cool.  Agreed.

Plaid Cow (19)

The meat is fresh, never frozen.  But, it is very well packaged.  The box is lined with thermal insulating material and there were four large ice packs.  I live in the South and it was in the 90’s the day the box arrived, but it was still very cold.  The ice packs weren’t even melted.

Plaid Cow Society has information about how to recycle all the packaging here, under FAQ on their site.

Plaid Cow (20)

Look at all that glorious meat!!

Plaid Cow (12)

This letter from the Plaid Cow Society invites you to join the Meat Revolution.  Which is to say, to help change the way meat brought from the field to you the consumer by becoming a member of the Plaid Cow Society.

Plaid Cow (13)

The back of the letter reiterated Plaid Cow Society‘s four guiding principles.

  1. Back to Nature – Grassfed beef with no antibiotics and no hormones.
  2. Be Honest – Always truthful, clear labels, and educate the consumer.
  3. Never Frozen – Product of the USA, as fresh as possible, and freezing is a NoNo.
  4. Helping the Planet – Mitigating Waste, goal of zero food waste, and more sustainable.

To join the Plaid Cow Society you first choose one of their two plans.  With the first plan you get 6 cuts of beef totaling 6-7 lbs delivered every week.  The cuts are slightly larger with this plan (a full 8oz).  The second plan delivers 6 cuts of beef totaling 6-7 lbs delivered every other week.  These cuts will be 6-8oz each.  You can switch between the two plans whenever you like and anytime you need to skip a delivery you just log on and skip a delivery.  Each delivery was originally $59.00, but is discounted to $47.20 right now.

The first cut of meat was 100% Grassfed Ground Beef.  Every cut of meat came with it’s own cooking instruction sheet.

Plaid Cow (21)

The meat was all very well packaged in vacuum sealed pouches.  I threw the packs in the fridge and nothing leaked.

Plaid Cow (6)

I used the ground beef to make burgers.  FYI – correctly cooked burgers are fried in a cast iron skillet.

Plaid Cow (7)

The resulting burgers were make you go weak in the knees fabulous.  I think it was the best burger I have ever had. Grassfed Plaid Cow Society beef, Swiss cheese, fresh picked tomatoes and fresh sliced dill pickles.   (You must buy whole dills and slice them just before you use them.  I don’t trust people who buy pre-sliced pickles.)  My picky-butt husband was in love with this burger!  He is ready to sign up for this box…..

The next cut of meat was the Tri Tip Steak.  There were two packages which were each between 7.5oz and 8.5oz.  Each cut has the packed on date listed as well as a freeze by date.

I cooked this Tri Tip Steak according to the cooking instructions (in cast iron of course).  It had some marbling (just right) and made a lovely medium rare steak.  All the cuts were perfectly trimmed with no fat or gristle to cut off.  No waste!!  Every piece of meat you get you can eat.

Plaid Cow (22)

This is the flat iron steak, the third cut of meat in the box.  We received the box on the 24th and it was packed on the 16th.  Not bad for making it across the country.

Plaid Cow (18)

Plaid Cow (4)

The fourth cut of meat was Skirt Steak.  The box had two packages which were between 5.5oz to 6.5oz apiece.  This was a very thin cut of meat (each piece is folded over in the package).  I sliced this into thin strips and cooked it with onions, baby portabella mushrooms, butter and a little garlic.  My kids told me I was the best cooker in the world.

Plaid Cow (16)

This cooking instruction sheet was good for the New York Steak and the Sirloin.

Plaid Cow (3)

The New York Steak was the fifth cut in the box.  Each package was between 5.5oz and 6.5oz.  All the meat is USDA inspected and labeled accordingly.

Plaid Cow (1)

And lastly, Top Sirloin Steak was the 6th cut of meat in the box.  Each package was between 7.5oz and 8.5 oz.

This steak was the epitome of what beef should be.  It was tender, juicy, flavorful and oh my goodness good!  No steak sauce required, this steak doesn’t need it.  Just a little salt and pepper while it’s cooking and it is ready to go.

Plaid Cow Society is rethinking the way meat buying is done.  Fresher, leaner, better grassfed meat delivered to your door.  I really enjoyed this box.  How could I not?  It’s meat, in a box.  Really good meat.
