National Geographic Little Kids is a bimonthly magazine subscription for 3-6 year old children that costs $15 each year. For $39 each year, you can subscribe to National Geographic Little Kids and receive an additional 6 books selected from the National Geographic Early Readers series. My son and I have very much enjoyed the National Geographic Early Readers we’ve received through the Little Thinker Box. They tend to cover one topic deeply, whereas the magazine contains features on lots of different animals.

FYI – This magazine is also available through Amazon Magazine Subscriptions, if you’re interested in subscribing and managing your subscriptions through Amazon.

The National Geographic Little Kids magazine is geared toward preschoolers. It features many different animals each month and uses them as well as natural scenes to discuss concepts that are important for preschoolers to grasp.

IMG_0825Children are often tasked with recognizing similarities and differences between pictures. They’re asked to make educated guesses about animal behavior. Here, a picture of wild horses is used as a starting point to discuss counting and comparative words. Detailed explanations are provided so kids can either confirm their insights or correct their hunches. These more academic exercises get progressively more difficult as you move through the magazine. The end of this month’s magazine contains a rhyming exercise, for instance.

Each magazine contains a featured article about a wild animal. This month, the feature discussed leopards. My son has enjoyed learning about the differences in jaguar and leopard spots in other books and was excited to gain more insight into leopards in this magazine.

IMG_0826In the center of each month’s magazine, you’ll find six animal flash cards that children can tear out. One side contains a picture of an animal. The reverse contains fun facts about the animal.

In addition to the main featured article, you’ll find shorter articles about animals and animal behavior. My son enjoyed learning about toad croaks this month.

My son enjoys this subscription very much. He loves receiving his own special magazines in the mail, and he loves learning about wild animals and looking at their pictures. I credit this magazine, in part, with nurturing my son’s excitement about nature and the outdoors. Thanks National Geographic Little Kid!
