LitRx is a subscription box for book lovers, fan girls, and people who are in need of something new to read but “don’t really want to put on pants” to go to a book store.  With fall weather finally showing up, I am super excited to get a new book to read without changing out of my jammies.

Similarly, LitRx notes that its monthly boxes deliver the remedy for book hangover (and even its box states!).  What is book hangover, you ask?  I’ll use LitRx’s definition:  “It’s 4 am and you’ve just finished reading the last page of your book. You’ve got to go to work or school in just a few hours, but the remnants of the story have overtaken your thoughts. You can’t believe it’s over! And that’s when the book hangover kicks in.”  Yep.  Been there.   Let’s see what the remedy for book hangover looks like!

20160921_185152Opening the box, I was greeted by minty green tissue paper…nice and soothing, especially if you have a book hangover, right?  (The box moved, I promise – that’s why the text is fuzzy.  Or else I’m doing a really good job of convincing you actually HAVE a book hangover!)

Here’s a look at everything in this month’s box.  According to LitRx, “every month you’ll receive a new-to-you book, a coordinating hand-crafted fragrance from Book Scents and 2-4 items inspired by the book and tailor-made for literary lovers.”  Doesn’t everything just look like fall!!!  (Did I mention fall is my favorite season?)20160921_185302

Here is the front of September’s information card.  It features the theme (Autumn Journey) and gorgeous color pictures of all of the items in the box. 20160921_185313

The reverse of the information card lists off the contents for the box, including a detailed description and why the item was included (e.g., what part of the story it was inspired by, etc.).  What fun!  20160921_185338Whispers in Autumn by Trisha Leigh ($14.99):  As a voracious reader, I will read virtually anything.  (Apparently as a child, if I was bored, I would read cereal boxes and canned food labels.)  So you would think I would not judge a book by its cover or it’s categorization.  I was a little suspicious of this book, though.  Not only does it look like a romance book to me (and that’s one genre I don’t enjoy) but it’s categorized as a young adult book.  Now – don’t get me wrong – I have two teen daughters and I actually enjoy a good YA novel now and then, but so many of them are cookie-cutter dystopian future romance novels and that just isn’t my jam.  On the other hand, they’re all my younger daughter reads…so that type of book is obviously someone’s jam.

I was terribly wrong to be suspicious.  This book is very good.  I’m only about a third of the way through it, but I am really enjoying it.  Sure, it is dystopian future, but it has some interesting elements, good themes, some sci fi to spice it up, and (unlike so many YA books now), it is really well written.  I can’t wait to finish the book, and then pass it on to my girls who will also enjoy it.  Way to go, LitRx – you fooled me with the cover, but I’m loving the book.

BookScentsCandle Summer’s Gone tin candle ($12.50):   I love these book-inspired candles.  Definitely adds another layer to the sensory experience of reading a good book.  This one has so many of my favorite scents — jasmine, vanilla, patchouli, lavendar.  Just like my initial impression of the book – I was suspicious.  So many of my favorite scents, but was it too much for a candle?  The answer is a definite no – they all mingle together for a nice, warm, floral fragrance that is just perfect for fall.20160925_171451

Compass Keychain ($11.00):  This such a beautiful pendant/keychain.  It is a little compass with a glass dome and an antique copper metal finish.  I just love it.  20160921_185345

Seasonal Print ($5.00):  Did I mention above that I love fall?  I just love this item.  It is a beautiful, heavy card stock print that can be framed or whatever.  The colors are brilliant and I have always enjoyed the message that is part of the print.  I don’t think I’ve read enough of the book to understand this item fully, but I know LitRx does a great job with the themes – the items are always totally on point to the book.

LitRx subscription boxes start at $40/month shipped, with discounts for 3- and 6-month subscriptions.  As a book lover, I loved the idea of this box – not only do the book’s characters become my new friends, but I also get to enjoy a “piece” of the characters in the goodies that come with the book…it’s almost like bringing the book into my life.  Such a fun box!  I know book choices are often very personal, but I think that any book lover would be happy to try LitRx out!  This is the third time I’ve reviewed a LitRx box…and although, like I said, I wasn’t sure about this month’s book, I am really enjoying it so far!

I loved your review of the book. You echoed exactly how I feel about many YA books. I really love well written ones that have great character development, like John Green’s novels. I find a lot of the dystopian future YA novels, and some adult ones too, to be too plot driven, which often leaves little room for character development and nuanced writing. It was great how you addressed these concerns, but then spoke of how this book rose above those pitfalls. I have not seen this book subscription box before; is it a YA book subscription box, or did this month just happen to have one selected? Also the key chain and candle looked nice too. I am looking forward to seeing another months review of this box. It has potential.
