Kaffe Box August (2)

This large product information card elaborates on the two coffee varieties in the Kaffe Box and the company that is this month’s featured roaster, Langora Coffee Roasters of Stjordal, Norway.  They are based out of a little red traditional storehouse in Stjordal.  “We select and purchase traceable specialty coffees, in season, with characteristic flavour profiles that excite us.  The quality of the coffee depends on factors such as region, terroir, variety and processing.  Together they contribute to form each coffee’s unique flavour.  Through the roasting process the team at Langora wish to highlight these characteristics, so that the natural flavours and aromas of the coffee are preserved.”

The first coffee variety from Langora Coffee Roasters was Burtukaana Ethiopia.  (I am thankful that I do not have to pronounce that for you.)  From the Guji region of Ethiopia this is a Guji Heirloom variety of coffee that is grown at an altitude of 2100MASL.  It was produced by Adola Washing Station and was harvested using the natural process.

The taste profile for this coffee is tropical fruit, strawberries, sweet and juicy.

The natural process used to process these beans has it’s roots in Ethiopia.  Although not as highly favored by most roasters as the more popular washed methods of processing, I think the natural process yields a coffee generally more to my liking.  The flavors seem to swirl and flow better.   The beans themselves tend to have less silver-skin attached and have a cleaner look.

This coffee had a sweet fruity taste akin to chocolate covered strawberries.  I really enjoyed this coffee.

The second coffee in the Kaffe Box was Wote Ethiopia again roasted by Langora Coffee Roasters.  This coffee is from the Gedeo, Yirgacheffe region and is the Yirgacheffe Heirloom variety.  It was produced by a Mr Mergya and processed using the Fully Washed method.

The flavor profile of this coffee is clean sweet cherries, citrus, and floral.

Although the Burtukaana was my favorite out of the two varieties, the Wote was not bad.  The coffee leaned heavily toward a cherry flavor to me, almost almondy, a kind of nutty sweetness.

The back of the bags were each printed with this information about the roaster (it’s basically the same as the information on the product card.)  Except, here they add the roast date for us and specify that the coffee is best if used within 4 to 6 weeks of this date.  We are well with that time frame, and the coffee was excellent!
