The theme for September 2016 was Drawing with Oil Pastels Inspired by Claude Monet!
The box arrived along with a helpful letter that detailed everything you need to know to get started.
Both of this month’s inspirations were printed on heavy weight card stock.
I especially loved the sunset hues in Twilight, Venice.
My first set of oil pastels! How exciting! When I first received these, I had no idea what to do with them. I’m so glad this subscription came with instructional videos online! They were superb. They offered not only directions in how to complete the art project itself, but also helpful historical background information about both mainstream art at the end of the nineteenth century in Paris and the rise of Impressionism.
In addition to the oil pastels, this month’s box also included a pencil, eraser, color shaper, two tortillions and a pouch to store them in.
The subscription went beyond tools in delivering everything you’d need to complete the project, including a large piece of butcher paper to protect your table.
I was especially glad to see these pieces of scratch paper for practice.
They also included three pieces of card stock to use for your final project(s).
I was a bit nervous when I started since it had been almost three decades since my last art class. Even though I loved art as a young child, once I got to middle school, all of my elective time was always taken up with music classes. So instead of learning how to make my own art, I’ve had to make do looking at artwork that other people have made for virtually my entire life. I’m thrilled to finally get to learn how to produce artwork myself!
After making a rough sketch in pencil of the composition of the piece, the online video asked me to play around with different techniques often utilized in impressionistic works.
After that introduction, the online tutorial walked me through how to create my own piece of art inspired by Monet. I loved the directions! I thought the video was extremely well done, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled with the result! Sure, there are changes I’ll make next time (I’ll stay away from purple as it was difficult to blend, for instance), but I’m thrilled with my first try. I can’t wait to play with my oil pastels later this week–I’d love to figure out how to make shadows on the water, and I’d also like to practice making individual plants more defined.
