Yummy Bazaar delivers gourmet food items to your door monthly. This Destination Food Club is available in a large Full Experience size (6-8 full sized gourmet items from one destination for $35.95) and mini Sampler size (6-8 sample sizes from around the world for $9.95).
This review covers the Sampler Box for August 2016 – only $9.95 per month!
The packaging is a bit simpler than the Full Experience Box, but you still get an info sheet detailing the contents of the box.
The sheet may borrow some of the imagery from the Full Experience box, but the products and destinations can be very different.
The info card details the products. The origin of each item is provided — we visited Japan, USA and France!
All the goodies in the box!
Makihara Matcha Baumkuchen – Japan ($3.95) Thid is actually a German import into Japan, and they have perfected and matcha-ized it! We tried this in the regular sized box in March. Here’s what Tom said about that non-Matcha version:
This soft cake is modeled after the original baked at a German exhibition hosted in Hiroshima in 1919. The ring shaped cake is a slice of a long rolled sheet of cake, creating a pretty, ringed appearance and texture. This style of cake remains popular in Japan, and I can taste the similarity between this and sweetened milk cakes that are also popular traditional desserts. It is very sweet and moist, with a soft and ever so slightly granular texture.
I can say that I totally agree! The matcha is super pleasant and light and almost tastes like pandan bread. Big hit with our crew!
Lutti Magnificat French Caramel Candy – France ($4.45) Sweet hard caramels with a slightly sweet center!
These are quite tasty and creamy (no wonder – made with butter, crème fraîche, and whole milk!) and had the perfect amount of caramelization.
Blue Crab Bay Co. Crab Dip Blend – USA ($2.95) I am a big fan of dip mixes to have on hand. I like this a lot more than last month’s full experience box (which had a can of crabmeat). For my personal tastes I will use canned chicken. I’m just not a seafood fan but I appreciate how versatile this is.
And yeah, I do totally keep tubs of sour cream in my fridge – I’m such a child of the South!
Vichy French Mint Candy – France ($1.95) These are really hard to describe except as slightly chalky but I feel that does them a grave disservice because I really enjoyed them!
These pastilles in particular are infused with the minerals from Vichy thermal waters. Are they back again? I feel transported to the 19th century with this mint!
PopArt Thai Coconut Curry Popcorn – USA ($1.79) I love uniquely flavored popcorn and this one is so great with a nice coconut curry flavor. As this box has sent me nearly all the flavors of Chef Torres’ chips I am really truly hoping that we’ll get all the flavors of this popcorn!
Auzier Chabernac Organic Marshmallow – France ($3.95) Unsurprisingly my kids went wild over these traditional tutti frutti traditional marshamllows! They are an assortment with very very faint natural coloring (no dyes) of violet, lemon, mandarin, and orange flower water. They were delightful – and so much tastier than today’s crazy tutti frutti mixes.
The Mini Box is always a hit with us and a wonderful way to try some delicious snacks from all over the world. It doesn’t have a theme but it’s a really good deal at less than $10 per month and with usually 3+ countries in the box – a good way to travel the globe!
