Play! By Sephora August 2016 box

Play! by Sephora is a monthly subscription box that brings only the best and exclusive Sephora beauty and makeup samples. The subscription costs $10.00 per month, and you’ll get 5 deluxe beauty products, playlists, a fragrance bonus item, plus coupons you can use when you visit in-store.

The theme for this month’s box is The Eye Openers! That little card is a PLAY! Pass that will get you 50 extra Beauty Insider points with a purchase from the box – in-store only.

Your subscription also entitles you to PLAY! Date meetups if your store participates. I don’t even have a Sephora (not even a JCP one) but this box totally excites me even without those experiences – I love the high end brands every month for just $10.

The items are placed inside a bag inside the box to keep everything secure. These are super cute – what are you using your bags for?

All the goodies in my August box!

Play! By Sephora August 2016 (4)

Lancôme Énergie de Vie Smoothing & Glow Boosting Liquid Care ($5.21) This is a super lightweight moisturizer – less than than a typical lotion and just what I want to use in summer. However, I found it sticky and it doesn’t come close to my Dr. Jart!

Obviously I need to browse Sephora more often because I just found out they have Ceramidin body oil, which I’m purchasing immediately.

CLEAN Reserve Blonde Rose ($1.33) This fragrance contains notes of “Aldehydic Watery, Rose, Peony, Jasmine, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Musk.” It’s a floral musk and it even has pairing notes on the card. This was too rose-y for me and my husband said it smells like an old couple. To be specific he said “His cheap cologne and her baby powder mixed together.” So yeah, not wearing that one.

Play! By Sephora August 2016 (6)

Caudalie Resveratrol Eye Lifting Balm ($19.84) I love Caudalie eye products and I totally hoard them – they’re all that! This balm contains a double whammy of hyaluronic acid for plumping plus peptides for brightening. Like all other Caudalie products this works really well and I will anxiously await the next one in a subscription – it’s so spendy!

Play! By Sephora August 2016 (7)

Make Up For Ever Artist Shadow in I-544 ($21 for fullsize – $6 sample) MUFE! (do you pronounce it muff or muffy or moofy? i like the latter).

Play! By Sephora August 2016 (8)

What a gorgeous purple-taupe color! I don’t see how this could be used as a blush unless you’re straight outta the 80s but it’s a gorgeous powder-gel shadow!  The shade is an iridescent Pink Granite.

Play! By Sephora August 2016 (9)

I especially love how this shade coordinates with the liner. It has intense pigmentation but also blends incredibly well due to the moisture spheres in the product that really help lay it down on your lids. This is really a gorgeous perfect product and I would totally try out additional shades.

Play! By Sephora August 2016 (10)

Sephora Collection Contour Eye Pencil in Flirting Game ($4.25) This is about half size, which is fine with me! This liner applied smoothly without tugging and was a beautiful color. It smudged easily before it set. I found it doesn’t run at all when wet and it smears only a tiny bit if rubbed.

Play! By Sephora August 2016 (11)

I was able to do thick & less thick even with a chubbier point!

Play! By Sephora August 2016 (12)

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara ($5.50) Black Black Black! I love the tagline, Bigger Blacker Badder, because that is EXACTLY what I want in my mascara!

Play! By Sephora August 2016 (13)

This mascara is designed to be as black as your goth teenage soul, or at least as black as UD’s Perversion liner. It’s perfect!

The August box had about $42 in value! Moreso than previous months it seemed tightly curated and the only miss for me was the fragrance. The whole thing is really incredible for $10 and even if we did have a Sephora – I love the ease of getting my samples at home.

The Sephora Play waitlist is open and you should be able to sign up now! What did you think of the box?

This has been my favorite box hands down. I hadn’t tried Perversion mascara yet and it’s amazing. It really justifies higher end mascara to me although I typically am happy with drugstore brands, and I LOVE the MUFE shadow, AND I think I’ll buy the Sephora eyeliner, I really really like it and never stray from black so this is good. I don’t mind perfume duds since it’s only a sample I’ll find a friend who wants it 🙂

This is sort of like makeup for dolls, it’s so small. The normal eye pencil is almost 2.5 times bigger than this stub. And although I haven’t tried it yet, the Caudalie eye cream, although it looks like a great brand, is already half empty when you start to squeeze it. Same with Lancome!

    Very bad value.

Perversion is my goto mascara. Every since we got it in Ipsy a couple years ago I can’t get enough. I love it.

IDK, I’ve been getting this subscription for a few months and I’m really close to quitting. I know it’s deluxe sample sizes but they are tiny! Maybe I’m spoiled by Birchbox and Ipsy. They may not be as high end but they have way better sizes. I like Sephora a lot and I was so excited about getting off the waitlist but it doesn’t seem worth it. I can go in-store and get 3 samples for free.

It totally depends on how often you go into the store. We don’t have one so it’s good for me. Certainly you can’t walk out of Sephora with a half eyeliner but I’m betting you could hit them up a few times for the equivalent of the Caudalie tube!

I’m a fan of em-you-eff-eeee! myself, because then you can add a squeel at the end, which is totally what I did when I saw that shadow swatched.

Lol I agree! I’m loving the MUFE shade but I found 2 dupes because I didn’t want to spend quite that much. Makeup Geek’s Promise Night is nearly identical and 6$, and if you have BH cosmetics foil eyes palette which is awesome btw, #23 is very close in color just darker/more pigmented.

      did you love it??

I DID! Wearing the shadow and eyeliner today! 🙂 I’m saving the mascara until I need it and haven’t tried the skincare yet; I’ll test the Lancome tonight.

I actually liked the perfume, too, which was a nice surprise–it’s the first CLEAN perfume I’ve tried that hasn’t made me yawn. I like that it smells kind of masculine (I’ve been wearing both masculine and feminine scents ever since I was old enough to wear perfume).
