Mixology Monthly July 2016 unboxing

I’m surprised that there were no squiggles or bubble wraps to keep the item secure, given that they’re glassware.  Instead, the items and cardboard framing was positioned such that the fragile items didn’t come into contact with anything else.

Everything in the July 2016 box!

Besides tools and glassware, you’ll also get recipe cards and ingredients to make that perfect cocktail!  They included recipes for two drinks that are likely to appeal to a wide audience and don’t require any specialty liqueurs.

Old Salt Merchants Coconut Breeze Sugar ($10):  Decorative flavored crystals of sugar for decorating any treat, whether it’s sugaring the rim of a glass, or decorating cookies or chocolates.  This variety has ordinary size crystals and a tropical coconut flavor.  I suspect this would be the ultimate dusting for chocolate-dipped macaroons or rimming a daiquiri.

Old Salt Merchants Lime Slice Sugar ($10):  Consisting of bigger sized crystals, this sugar has a bright lime flavor, making it ideal for rimming a margarita or coconut daiquiri.

Hand-Crafted Coasters (4):  Made from canning jar lids, these coasters have a cork interior.  The portion that rests on the table is coated with a rubbery paint coating to prevent slipping or scratching on the table surface.

Remix Muddler:  Many drinks call for muddling ingredients in the bottom of the shaker or glass, usually sugar, citrus, or herbs — I liked the Remix much better than my standard wooden muddler.  It is taller (a big help when working with a pitcher), has a nice grip, cleans easily, is unvarnished and non-porous, grabs the muddled items well instead of slipping around, and the silicone head doesn’t clang on glassware.

Glass Pitcher With Removable Ice Core:  the pitcher is made of thick glass and has a sturdy handle and elegant silhouette.  The core is a handy innovation whether serving mixed drinks or just tea or juice — it keeps the drink cold without diluting it.  The core is intended to be filled with cubes, not frozen with water in it.  I imagine the pitcher sweats less than those with the cooling chamber along the outside of the vessel, as well, because the coldest part is in the interior.

The glass pitcher by itself.

The lid has a gap built in for pouring, and the ice core is detachable, allowing use of the pitcher as a standard vessel. Mixology Monthly July 2016 (1)

Even with the core attached, the pitcher holds quite a bit of liquid (those are grapefruit rounds, not blood oranges)!

We mixed a batch of Tom Collins — well, sort of.  It was actually a vodka Collins, using primarily grapefruit in place of lemon, and simple syrup in place of granular sugar.  Still, quite a fine way to test out the pitcher.  The ice core kept the drinks cold, and I found it useful to have it in the pitcher — there were no ice cubes cascading out when I poured the drinks, and it had the added benefit of keeping the muddled fruit somewhat in place.  This would also make a great pitcher for sun tea, as you could insert the ice core into the brewed tea and not worry about dilution.

Note from Brandy: This drink was AMAZING! You must make it! Tom does fancy himself a mixologist and I loved the pitcher because it made the drinks even – and cut down his fiddling time! This is an action shot of my drink – he added a cute chevron straw at the end 🙂 It was so darling that I took a photo of it and stuck it on Facebook, much to the great envy of my friends. He has promised to next put the lime in my coconut. We need rum!
