Parish Parcel is a monthly curated Cajun experience – receive six to eight uniquely Cajun and authentic Louisiana made items each month. Each parcel includes a taste of Louisiana – spices, apparel, food, art, music, recipes, and other merchandise. This subscription is ideal “for the stranded Cajun living away from home, or someone who simply craves a little Cajun spice in their lives.”

I fall somewhere between those two things – I lived in New Orleans many years ago, and it didn’t take long for me to incorporate many aspects of Louisiana into my daily life, so I was excited to see a box that might deliver a bit of Louisiana to my doorstep.

My parcel arrived and announced itself with this lovely Parish Parcel stamp. I picked up the box and heard things moving around – more on that later.

box options

I received the standard box, which is $29/month. There is also a Lagniappe box, which is $49 and includes a t-shirt and additional items. “Lagniappe” (pronounced “lan-yap”) means essentially a little something extra, like a bonus.

unbox

I opened the box to find things neatly packaged, but I was surprised there wasn’t any packing material – I am used to finding things in paper crinkles or packing peanuts.

unboxed

As promised, the box included a variety of food and other merchandise.

In addition to the food and merchandise, the parcel included several cards with information about this month’s Parish. For the uninitiated, parishes are essentially counties. This month features Acadiana including St. Martin, St. Landry, Evangeline, Calcasieu, and Lafayette Parish.

cards

One card highlights the contents of the box.

Another highlights a local artist (not shown) and a local musician (below) – The Band Courtboullion! There’s also a free download available.

music card I really like that this box didn’t just send me “stuff” – it is nice that they highlight some local artists and musicians, as those are both important to the culture of Louisiana.

They really are from Louisiana!

I am already familiar with two of these products. The Tony Chachere’s is something pretty much everyone in New Orleans has in their spice cabinet. It is all purpose. I even used to put this in my ramen back in college. [Note from Brandy: she has me to thank for that, I’m addicted to Tony’s!] I have seen the Slap Ya Mama products before, but never purchased them.

We made the coffee at work – I don’t love flavored coffee, but my coworker enjoyed this. And pecans are a very southern thing, so the chocolate pecan pie flavor is on theme.

And hot sauce, well, is hot sauce. But this one is as good as others, so it will get used, probably when I make the jambalaya. It is too bad they can’t easily send sausage – that is really the thing I miss from Louisiana and it makes or breaks a jambalaya. Maybe in a future box?? That would be exciting!

Louisiana Koozie

Louisiana-Shaped Cookie Cutter ($5.99)

I love a novelty cookie cutter – I have a giant fleur de lis cookie cutter that is actually really impractical to use. This Louisiana shaped one is much more practical for use when I am hosting a themed event.

koozie

The koozie declares your love for Louisiana, and when you drink out of your can everyone can see where your koozie came from. Neat!

Bourbon Royalty Queen of Bourbon Candle: This smelled homey – and nice. Warm, lightly fruity, with a good dose of vanilla bourbon/rum. I loved it so much it’s nearly gone!

damaged

My only real disappointment with this box is I think they need to work on their packaging. The heavy bottle of hot sauce seems to have bounced around and smushed the jambalaya box, dinged the candle, and bent the cookie cutter a tad.

This was a fun box to receive. It would make a great gift for someone who misses Louisiana or just likes Cajun things.

OK. I was going to say….weird? That is a new one for me. But maybe I should have known all along that brandy does that. I do like it in lots of cooking, particularly soups, stews, etc. I just dumped some into red beans. Now I am hungry.

I love Tony’s! I carry a mini Tupperware of it in my purse, I particularly love it on my cottage cheese in the mornings at the office!
