Girls Can Crate is a monthly subscription for children between 5 and 10 years of age that promotes the idea that girls can do whatever they set their minds to. Each month features a different female pioneer whose story inspires girls to achieve. Each box includes a 20 page activity book that includes the heroine’s story, 2-3 STEAM activities and creative play props. Boxes cost $29.95 each month and can ship to either the United States or Canada. Although this box is intended for girls, I’m a firm believer that it’s crucial for boys to believe that girls can do whatever they set their minds to! I’m excited to work through this box with my son.
Each box arrives well packaged with attractive squiggles.
July’s crate is chock full of information, activities and art supplies!
I was fascinated to learn that gender stereotypes start so early in life. I’m glad my son and I are working through this crate now, when he’s young.
Since this is our first box, we received a number of art supplies to get us started. My son was thrilled to receive a new set of markers and a pair of scissors.
Patsy Mink is the heroine of the July 2016 Girls Can Crate. As a former congresswoman, she advocated for the passing and implementation of Title IX in our schools. The timing of this box was perfect; it got my son excited to watch all of the women’s events at the Olympics.
I think these pointers are spot on. I look forward to ordering the suggested books so my son and I can continue to talk about equity issues for women and girls.
I’m embarrassed to say that I had never heard of Patsy Mink prior to exploring this Girls Can Crate with my son. After reading this brief outline of her life, I was intrigued and wanted to learn more!
The enclosed activity booklet promised a more details.
I like how the booklet explained desirable traits exhibited by the heroine of the crate. I found talking about these traits with my son very worthwhile.
After reading about Patsy Mink’s life, my son got to work on the activities. First, he learned about five different female athletes, each of whom experienced considerable success in her athletic career.
My son enjoyed matching the descriptions of the athletes with their pictures up above.
Next, he enjoyed completing a maze and trying to draw a reflection of half of the Olympic torch.
The torch exercise was especially challenging for him, but he kept trying and persevered.
Next, he learned how to play one of my husband’s favorite games, cornhole.
My son thought this was so much fun that he kept playing well beyond the 20 point mark.
When he returned to his book, he was delighted to work through a bunch of track and field math questions.
He enjoyed finding the ball that didn’t belong with the others.
He also had a lot of fun with the word search.
After completing the activity book shortly after receiving our crate, we waited for the Olympics to officially start so we could keep tally of Team USA’s medals!
My son loves watching the Olympics on TV, and he found this exercise very rewarding.
Both my kids have enjoyed playing with their Olympic rings.
To help foster pretend play, the craft activity this month asked kids to make their own gold medals. All supplies were provided.
For those who live in high altitudes or who have unreliable ovens, Girls Can Crate offered some supplementary suggestions.
The most difficult part of this activity was rolling out the clay. It took a lot of strength. Once my son got it into shape, though, the result was fantastic.
My kids have worn this nonstop since it came out of the oven. My son was disappointed to learn that he couldn’t wear it to sleep.
My son has decided that he wants to swim in the Olympics when he gets older.
My daughter wants to do everything her big brother does, so I’m guessing she wants to swim too.
In addition to the sheer fun of throwing a “shotput,” the next activity asks kids to think about what makes an object fly a long distance.
The enclosed booklet details the shotput game along with hands on activities kids can do to experiment with trajectory and distance. My son didn’t hesitate to tell me: to throw a ball really far, you should start up high and throw the ball up in front of you with a lot of force.
My son had fun throwing his shotput both overhand and underhand.
Hooray!
What a fun box! My son loved the Olympics-inspired theme this month, and he and I both enjoyed learning about Patsy Mink and all she did to ensure women’s equality in sports. We can’t wait to see who will be featured next month! Whoever it is, these spoilers look great! Experimenting with plants and making an outdoor art installation sound right up my son’s alley!
