Book Bears is a monthly book subscription for children. Curated by a children’s book author and editor, you can expect to receive one book per month. Shipping is free in the US, and subscriptions cost $15.99 per month. They have two target age groups: 2-5 year olds and 5-8 year olds. We received the package for 5-8 year olds.
Each month’s book arrives wrapped in plastic inside a cushioned bag.
In addition to this month’s book selection, we also received a coloring sheet that my son can use to make a record of his reading.
For every new subscriber who signs up, Book Bears will donate one new children’s book to a child who might not otherwise have access to new books.
I love the suggestions and questions included along with this month’s book selection.
“Substitute Creacher” by Chris Gall ($12.67) includes a little magic and a lot of fun. One day, when their teacher is out, a classroom of naughty students receives a strange substitute teacher: a creacher. As the children continue to misbehave, their substitute tells them stories of other children who misbehaved and what happened to them. The final such story explains how he himself became transformed from misbehaving boy into creacher. With a redemptive ending, though, the message was clear: even those who misbehave can change their ways and find acceptance again. My son loved how the strange creacher voice often rhymed, and he was intrigued by the mysterious magical gnome who appeared throughout the book.
My son has added this cute paper to his coloring queue. It will provide him with a happy reflection on his time reading “Substitute Creacher.”
My son enjoyed receiving and reading his new book very much. He wasn’t yet familiar with substitute teachers or gnomes, but he was eager to learn about them. He thought the magic in the book was cool and mysterious. He can’t wait to see what they send out next month!
